Zverev has historically dominated Dimitrov

Carlos Alcaraz’s bid for a Sunshine Double came to an end this season as Grigor Dimitrov defeated the Spaniard in the Miami Open 2024. In the quarterfinals, the Bulgarian dashed the top seed’s hopes with a straight-set win of 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday. Dimitrov also snapped Alcaraz’s nine-match winning streak, disrupting the World No. 2’s dominant form.

Both of Dimitrov’s recent victories over Alcaraz occurred at Masters events, and their head-to-head record now stands at 2-3. A place in the final would almost certainly propel Dimitrov back into the top ten rankings for the first time since 2018. Meanwhile, Alcaraz finds himself once again in the crosshairs of Jannik Sinner, who aims to claim the World No. 2 position.

On Friday, Dimitrov faces Germany’s Alexander Zverev in his fourth semifinal of 2024. This marks Dimitrov’s first appearance in the Miami semifinals. With a season record of 19-4 and a title run in Brisbane, Dimitrov is in strong form.

Grigor Dimitrov vs Alexander Zverev – Preview

If Alexander Zverev reaches the final in Miami this season, it will mark his first ATP 1000 final since Madrid in 2022. The German player is set to compete in his first semifinal in Miami since 2018. Should he advance to the final, it would also be his first appearance in a final since 2018. A title victory would earn the World No. 5 his first Masters trophy since the 2021 Cincinnati Masters.

However, all of these achievements hinge on Zverev overcoming a formidable opponent: Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian has already dispatched two top-ten seeds in rapid succession. First, he defeated Hubert Hurkacz (seeded 8th) on Tuesday, and then he claimed a significant victory over the top seed, Carlos Alcaraz, on Thursday. Alcaraz suffered his second straight-set defeat in less than a year, with the previous one occurring at the ATP 1000 Masters in Paris last season.

Zverev has been dominant throughout the tournament, not dropping a single set. In contrast, Dimitrov faced challenging battles, including two five-set matches. His first test came against Yannick Hanfmann in the third round, followed by another grueling encounter against Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth.

Head-to-head records

Matches – 8

Alexander Zverev  – 7

Grigor Dimitrov – 1

The head-to-head between Zverev and Dimitrov is rather lopsided and it appears that the German is Dimitrov’s kryptonite.

Dimitrov has a sole career win against the German going back to their very first meeting in 2014 in Basel. Since then it has been Zverev all the way with four of his seven wins against the Bulgarian coming in 2023 alone.

Where and how to watch the live streaming and TV broadcast of the 2024 Miami Open semifinal match between Grigor Dimitrov vs Alexander Zverev in India?

Sony Network’s mainstream channels and their streaming service, SonyLiv are on hand for Indian viewers to tune in to the semifinal match between Grigor Dimitrov vs Alexander Zverev. Additionally, Tennis TV offering live coverage alongside highlights and match replays is a premium option on offer.

Prediction

With four losses in ATP 1000 events to Zverev, Dimitrov heads into the semifinal as the underdog. Although he pushed his rival at the US Open and Chengdu, Dimitrov has yet to secure a win against Zverev in their previous seven meetings. Zverev was just 17 years old when Dimitrov last defeated him.

Grigor Dimitrov will step onto the court with confidence after defeating Carlos Alcaraz for the second time since October. The Bulgarian must bring his A-game to the semifinal.

As prolific servers, it comes as no surprise that Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev have nearly 4800 aces each in their careers. Zverev has delivered 176 aces out of 297 service games (60%) this season, while Dimitrov has managed 118 aces from 190 service games (63%). Both players boast an identical percentage of service games won: 89% for Zverev and 90% for Dimitrov. However, Zverev’s 38% conversion rate on break points gives him the edge over Dimitrov’s 30%.

Result: Zverev to win three sets.
