Injury woes force stars to withdraw from Monte Carlo Masters.

The European leg of the ATP Masters 1000 calendar commences in Monaco on Sunday, April 7th. The Monte Carlo Masters 2024 attracts top male tennis players, and 2024 is no exception. This year, we’ll witness an influx of emerging talent with players like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Holger Rune competing alongside veterans such as Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev, and Casper Ruud.

Monte Carlo also signals the start of the clay court phase of the ATP 1000 series of tennis, serving as a precursor to the French Open.

The rigorous demands of the tour inevitably lead to injuries and other issues, resulting in player withdrawals. This holds for the Monte Carlo Masters as well.

Players who have withdrawn from Monte Carlo Masters 2024

Rafael Nadal

The Spaniard is by far the most significant name not to turn up at an event he has dominated for so long. Since his debut in 2005, he picked up a record 11 trophies in Monaco along the way — eight of them consecutively. Nadal’s absence extends back to the beginning of 2023, except for a brief appearance in Brisbane at the beginning of 2024.

The 37-year-old’s hip surgery last summer continues to hamper his return to competitive tennis, jeopardizing his preparations for the French Open. The King of Clay has fourteen titles on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Tommy Paul

Following a close-fought match five-setter at Melbourne, which ended in a defeat, Tommy Paul appeared to be getting his act together. The American won the ATP 250 event in Dallas, reaching finals at Delray Beach and the semifinals at Indian Wells.

The World No. 15 was all set to repeat his deep run in California when he suffered an ankle injury during the Miami Open, forcing him to retire from his second-round clash against fellow American Martin Damm.

Paul was in the lead 6-4, 1-2, when the unfortunate incident occurred. He approached the net for a forehand volley on Damm’s serve but instead hobbled and appeared to be in considerable pain.

His return to the tennis court looks to be in doubt until at least the Mutua Madrid Open later this month.

Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic is nursing a knee injury in Monte Carlo and won’t be participating in the ATP Masters event. The 2014 US Open champion is undergoing rehabilitation and expects to compete in the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid. The 35-year-old’s most recent title was at the St. Petersburg Open in 2021 in Russia.

The Croatian attempted a comeback this season but has yet to secure a win in 2024. He has not played since the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires. Cilic has been dealing with injury issues since his walkover against Tallon Griekspoor in Pune last year. His only other match in 2023 was in Umag, where he was defeated in the first round by Flavio Cobolli.

The latest series of injuries has disrupted the veteran Croatian’s comeback plans, preventing him from competing in the Sunshine Double and now in Monte Carlo.

The vacancies left by these players will be filled by the first three alternates for the tournament: Marcos Giron, Dominik Koepfer, and Zhizhen Zhang.
