Top five nations with most consecutive Davis Cup titles
Team Italy joined the ranks of countries to have successfully defended their title by claiming the 2024 Davis Cup.
The origins of the Davis Cup can be traced back to 1900. The event’s humble beginnings saw the USA take on Great Britain, then playing as the British Isles in the inaugural edition. Its century-old origin story makes the tournament, the oldest team competition in tennis. The United States and Great Britain clashed at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston, Massachusetts.
Since Dwight Davis, a Harvard University alumnus, spearheaded an American victory over the British at the inaugural edition, the event has mushroomed to include a record 157 nations in the 2024 edition.
Being a team event did not rob the Davis Cup of its sheen. Some of the sport’s biggest names answered the call of their respective countries in place of personal glory to compete for the shiny trophy.
Legends of tennis, including Fred Perry, Rene Lacoste, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi, enjoyed success in the tournament. They were joined by the legends of the 21st century, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and Andy Murray, as the team event continues to attract top talent every season.
Team Italy has returned home with the Davis Cup for the third time since winning the trophy for the first time in 1976. The Italians mounted a successful title defence in 2024 having claimed the trophy in 2023 after a gap of nearly half a century.
Since 1900, a total of 16 teams representing various nations have lifted the much sought-after trophy. Read on to know more about the five countries heading the honour roll with the most Davis Cup titles.
Nations with most consecutive Davis Cup titles
USA – 7 titles
The United States of America is the most decorated team in history. Having won the first edition in 1900 against Great Britain, they have gone on to win a total of 32 Davis Cup titles over the years. The Americans defeated Great Britain in the next edition, held in 1902.
What followed was a decade-long title drought despite making nine finals between 1903 and 1912. In 1913, the USA defeated Great Britain to return to the winner’s circle. Between 1920 and 1926, Team USA won the title a record seven times, the longest streak by any country. Their last win came in the 2007 season when they defeated Russia, 4-1, on home turf in Portland, Oregon.
France – 6 titles
France, the third team on the list, bagged 10 titles from 18 appearances in the Davis Cup finals. In 1927, the French side comprising of the four Musketeers of French tennis, René Lacoste, Henri Cochet, Jacques Brugnon and Jean Borotra, won their first Davis Cup. The triumph ended the domination of the USA, Great Britain and Australia at the event.
France won six of their 10 Davis Cup titles between 1927 and 1932, with the USA ending up on the losing side on five occasions and Great Britain once in those six years. Team France won their 10th and most recent title in 2017, with a 3-2 scoreline against Belgium.

Australia – 4 titles
Australia made the first significant impression at the 1907 Davis Cup, beating Great Britain for their first trophy at the team event. The Aussies went on to add three more titles between 1908 and 1911 against the USA in the finals. The Australians represented a combined Australian-New Zealand time as Australasia between 1905 and 1922.
In 1939, the Australian scripted a rare turnaround from 2-0 down against the United States to win the tie 3-2 for their seventh Davis Cup title. Team Australia repeated their four-win streak between 1950 and 1953, overcoming the USA in each of those four years. They are on the lookout for their first title since 2003, having defeated Spain 3-1 in Melbourne when current captain Lleyton Hewitt was part of the team.
Great Britain – 4 titles
Great Britain owns 10 Davis Cup trophies since making their debut at the team event in 1900 along the USA. Their longest winning run was between 1903-1906 for four straight titles. That milestone was equalled between 1933 and 1936, thanks to the arrival of Fred Perry and Bunny Austin on the scene. Perry’s Davis Cup win-loss record of 45-7 was instrumental in earning Great Britain their second haul of four straight trophies.
The British went without a Davis Cup for the next eighty years until 2015, when Andy Murray led his side with two singles wins and teamed up with his brother Jamie Murray to defeat Belgium 3-1 in their backyard. The Murray brothers helped deliver England their tenth and most recent Davis Cup trophy.

Sweden – 2 titles
The Swedes first made their debut in the 1925 edition, and their first title came 50 years later. Sweden stepped into the limelight at the Davis Cup in 1975 winning their first Davis Cup trophy. Pulling off a win on debut was no easy task, yet Sweden did just that when they overcame Czechoslovakia 3-2. Bjorn Borg’s presence in 1975 helped as he won both his allotted single matches and the doubles match in the company of Ove Bengtson.
Sweden defended their Davis Cup wins on two occasions – 1984 and 1985 and once in again in 1997 and 1998. The Swedes defeated the dominant Davis Cup side, the USA, twice in the Davis Cup finals. The first time was in 1984, with a 4-1 followed by a 5-0 whitewash in 1997. The following year, Sweden defeated Italy 4-1 for their most recent and last Davis Cup victory.
