Naomi Osaka vs Clara Tauson semi-final match will be only their second meeting on tour.

Naomi Osaka has breezed through the competition since dropping a set against Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. Jelena Ostapenko, Anastasija Sevastova and 2017 champion Elina Svitolina all lost to Osaka in straight sets.

The former World No. 1 dropped just a single game in her 49-minute victory over Sevastova (6-1, 6-0) and before going on to make quick work of Svitolina – 6-2, 6-2 in just 68 minutes.

The Japanese player will take on Dane Clara Tauson, who sent home Madison Keys with a 6-1, 6-4 win in 70 minutes. Tauson has yet to lose a set in the tournament and has taken a significant step forward in the WTA 1000 event, since losing her opening-round match in Canada last year to Paula Badosa.

Osaka is one step closer to reaching her first WTA 1000 final since Miami in 2022. The four-time Grand Slam champion’s last title was the 2021 Australian Open.

Preview

Clara Tauson’s impressive form has landed her on the cusp of her third final of the ongoing season. She previously reached the finals of the ASB Classic in January, which she won and followed it up by reaching the finals of the Dubai Open in the UAE.

Tauson rose to a career-high WTA Ranking of No. 19 after she knocked out World No. 11 Elena Rybakina in the third round at Wimbledon.

The Dane makes a strong case for herself as a US Open contender after accounting for Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek in Montreal for back-to-back top-10 wins. The 22-year-old Tauson knocked out Wimbledon champion Swiatek.

She then followed it up with a crushing victory over reigning Australian champion Madison Keys, also in straight sets.

Osaka winding up her working relationship with Patrick Mouratoglou appears to have worked in her favour. The Japanese player has reached the semi-final of a big event for the first time in 2025. Osaka’s appearance in the finals at Auckland ended in a retirement. A trip to Saint Malo in France yielded a title run for the World No. 49.

Tauson is on the verge of emulating Caroline Wozniacki, who is the last Danish player to reach the finals of the WTA 1000 event. Wozniacki won the Canadian Open when it was hosted by Montreal in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2017.

The Tauson-Osaka semi-final match follows the last four face-off between Elena Rybakina and Canadian wildcard, Victoria Mboko.

Tomasz Wiktorowski’s presence in the Osaka camp could not have come at a better time. Apart from a WTA 125, Osaka had little to show by way of results befitting her status as a former World No. 1. Barring a slight hiccup against Liudmila Samsonova in round two, none of her other opponents were able to present a serious challenge to Osaka.

In their previous match, an abdominal injury prevented Osaka from winning her first title as a mother. Tauson went on to lift the trophy and break into the top 20, while it turned out to be a case of missing out by the proverbial whisker for Osaka. 

Tauson has the required temperament to unsettle Osaka. However, the former World No. 1 has hit her groove this week and is long overdue for a major triumph.
