Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will be eyeing their maiden Games gold at Paris Olympics 2024.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, a match that nobody will get tired of watching despite this being the duo’s second encounter in less than 40 days. As soon as the current world number one, Jannik Sinner, withdrew from the Games, it was certain that these two stars would clash against each other in the finale of Paris Olympics 2024.

Djokovic will have painful memories of their last encounter, and he will be waiting to avenge that. The Paris Games come across as his one final opportunity to have a gig at the only exclusive silverware missing from his otherwise illustrious cabinet: Olympic gold.

A knee injury wasn’t enough to hold back the 36-year-old, who’s toiled hard and faced some challenging opponents on his journey to the semifinals. Unlike the 2024 Wimbledon, a much tougher draw was presented to the Serb, and having competed and triumphed over each one of them, the 24-time Grand Slam Champion looks to be in great shape coming into the finals.

His best performance at the Games came back in 2008 in Beijing, when he won a bronze. Hence, the Serbian has already guaranteed a career-best outing at the 2024 Games and will be desperate to make it gold.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic match preview

Carlos Alcaraz has had a relatively easy route to the final. While a tougher draw might not have changed the results, it has been a hectic schedule for him. Despite winning four Grand Slams, participating in both singles and doubles in the same tournament is new territory for the Spaniard. His dream of winning a medal alongside his idol was crushed by the American pair of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek.

He now faces a player he dominated in the final of Wimbledon 2024. Novak Djokovic leads Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on head-to-head but trails to Alcaraz, a record he would want to improve. Many considered his loss to the 21-year-old a month ago as the official passing of the baton.

Another defeat to his Spanish nemesis would all but confirm that he is no longer the best in tennis. Djokovic, however, provided the best possible response the last time he lost a Wimbledon final to the 21-year-old.

In a nerve-wracking final at the Cincinnati Open, the Serbian prevailed to silence his critics. Whether he can replicate that masterclass at the world’s most prestigious event and end his quest for gold remains to be seen.

Head-to-head records

Matches – 6

Carlos Alcaraz – 3

Novak Djokovic – 3

One of those rare head-to-head battles in which Djokovic doesn’t lead his rival. The duo last met at the historic 2024 Wimbledon final where Alcaraz crushed the Serbian in straight sets. – More details here

Prediction

In his semi-final against a charged-up Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic put a full stop to all the question marks lingering over his fitness and knee injury. It was an absolute masterclass from the Serbian, as he ended up breaking his opponent’s serve five times in the match. The 36-year-old has already reached his career-best at the Olympics, playing his maiden final at the Games.

However, he will not stop until he attains the gold medal. Like him, Carlos Alcaraz will also have his first shot at a medal at the Games. Despite being only 21, the Spaniard has seen remarkable growth in skill and popularity, so much so that he has overtaken the 24-time Grand Slam champion to enter this contest as the favorite.

There haven’t been many encounters where Djokovic hasn’t entered as the player to beat, but such has been the dominance of Alcaraz over the last six months—winning both Wimbledon and the French Open. Renowned for his ability to silence his critics when it counts the most, it is now or never for Djokovic as he seeks a gold medal, potentially for the last time.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
