Valentin Vacherot became the lowest ranked ATP-1000 Masters champion in Shanghai.
World No. 204 Valentin Vacherot completed one of tennis’ most remarkable underdog stories by winning the Shanghai Masters 2025, becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to lift a Masters 1000 title while earning a mouthwatering prize money.
Entering the tournament as a qualifying alternate, the Monegasque stunned nine opponents en route to his first ATP title, soaring from obscurity to world No. 40.
His fairytale run included a stunning semi-final win over Novak Djokovic, capped by a historic all-family final. In the championship match, Vacherot defeated his cousin Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 14 minutes.
Showing remarkable composure, he was broken only once while converting three of 14 break points to seal victory.
The man from Monaco had earlier stunned four-time Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets, handing the Serbian his fourth consecutive semi-final defeat. It was a major shock in a draw that had opened up, with Jannik Sinner crashing out in the second round and Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing before the event.
Before the Shanghai Masters 2025, Vacherot had accumulated approximately $594,077 in career prize money. His victory not only boosted his career earnings, but nearly tripled them.
