Carlos Alcaraz walks into the 2026 US Open as the reigning champion, but his path back to Flushing Meadows has been anything but smooth.
A right wrist injury in April kept him off tour for four months, forcing him to skip clay Masters, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the entire hard-court swing including Cincinnati. New York will be his first competitive match since mid-April.

This is the one working against him rather than for him. Since the Masters 1000 format began in 1990, no man has lifted the US Open trophy without featuring at either North American hard-court event beforehand (Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open). Alcaraz will have to defy history if he wishes to defend his title in New York.
