Sriram Balaji/Niki Poonacha will start India’s proceedings on day 2

Consecutive defeats from one-set up in both the men’s singles rubbers have left India’s hopes of qualifying for the Davis Cup 2026 quarter-finals in jeopardy.

Playing away from home, India needed at least one win today to keep their spirits high ahead of an important day 2, but a 0-2 deficit has put them way back in the scheme of things.

Dhakshineswar Suresh kicked off the tie against South Korea’s No. 1 player Soonwoo Kwon. Suresh, who was India’s architect in their historic win over the Netherlands, seemed to continue to live up to his reputation of ‘giant killer’, as he started off incredibly well and won the opening set.

The Indian served brilliantly, rattling Kwon early on, who looked rusty in the first few games of the match. However, Kwon found his range in the second and third sets, and the home crowd got behind their local favorite.

Suresh lacked the same consistency on serve and even committed numerous unforced errors, eventually going down in the deciding set.

All eyes then turned to India’s No. 1 singles player Sumit Nagal, who was up against former Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung.

This was a must-win contest from an Indian point of view, and Nagal’s head start suggested that the clash would be one-sided. He sped to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, eventually closing out 6-2.

Nagal started the second set on a promising note, and even found the break. Serving at 4-3, 40-15 and being just two games away from winning the contest, Nagal made a huge unforced error on the forehand. He was broken in the game, and the momentum shifted dramatically in Chung’s favour.

Nagal struggled to regain his composure and lost the second set 4-6. The third set saw Nagal fight back from a break down to level terms, but it was simply not enough in the end, as Chung found his rhythm, and executed backhand winners and drop shots with precision.

As a result, on a day where India would have felt they could have dominated proceedings and taken a 2-0 lead, the country now finds itself on the brink of elimination. This will indeed be a tough pill to swallow, as India had the opportunity to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time since 1993.

On Day 2, India must win all its matches. The day begins with the men’s doubles match, followed by the reverse fixtures in singles.
