Davis Cup 2026: India’s quarter-final hopes dashed after defeat to South Korea

Sriram Balaji-DK Suresh were the only Indians to win a match in the tie
After trailing by 0-2 at the end of the opening day, Team India were always going to find it tough to make a comeback in their Davis Cup 2026 qualifiers tie against South Korea.
India’s doubles duo of N Sriram Balaji and Dhakshineswar Suresh registered a three-set victory over Park Uisung and Jisung Nam to help India open its account in the second round of the Davis Cup 2026 qualifiers.
However, it was always going to come down to the singles matches where India had fallen short on the earlier day. With no room for error, India had to win both reverse singles rubbers to win this tie.

Unfortunately, India’s No. 1 singles player Sumit Nagal received a one-sided thrashing at the hands of the World No. 150, Soonwoo Kwon.
Kwon was ruthless from start to finish, and Nagal could not even put up a fight. With Nagal’s 1-6 2-6 defeat, South Korea won the tie 3-1.
It was indeed a disappointing end for Indian tennis, as the country could not have asked for a better opportunity, particularly after their impressive wins earlier over Switzerland and the Netherlands.
India will rue their losses on the opening day. Sumit Nagal, in particular, should have crossed the line in the second set itself against Hyeon Chung, as the Indian led by a set and a break.

It was South Korea who triumphed on home soil thanks to incredible grit, determination and teamwork, with the support of their home crowd. They advance to the Davis Cup Final 8 for the first time in their 66-year tournament history since debuting in 1960.
India, on the other hand, will shift their focus to the 2026 Asian Games, where the country will hope to continue their ritual of winning a medal in the discipline. Since 2000, India has won at least one medal in tennis in every edition of the Asian Games.
