On Tuesday, defending champion and sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin his quest for a fourth Monte Carlo crown. The Greek World No. 8 takes on unseeded Australian Jordan Thompson in the round of 32 at the Monte Carlo Masters. During his title run last year, Tsitsipas defeated an in-form Jannik Sinner in three sets to make the final.

A successful defence will fetch Tsitsipas his fourth Monte Carlo win and nudge him ahead of Ilie Nastase, Bjorn Borg, and Thomas Muster as the most successful player in Monte Carlo. Only 11-time winner Rafael Nadal will remain ahead of Tsitsipas. Stefanos Tsitsipas is also the only Greek player to have won the Monte Carlo Masters title.  

Thompson beat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-3 in his opening-round match to set up the second-round meeting with Tsitsipas. The Australian has beaten the Frenchman in straight sets in every one of their four meetings, including twice in 2025 alone.  

The 30-year-old Australian kept his unforced errors to a minimum, making only 18 to 34 by Perricard. Thompson held it together as the towering 6’8” Frenchman unleashed 24 winners and nine aces but compensated with 34 unforced errors and four double faults.

Tsitsipas heads into the second-round face-off against Thompson backed by a 3-1 head-to-head lead. A solid week in Dubai in February saw Tsitsipas lift his first ATP 500 trophy. The Greek broke his ATP 500 jinx to record his first title run in eleven finals when he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime, 6-3, 6-3 in just under 90 minutes. It also marked his return to the ATP Top Ten, with Tsitsipas currently occupying the No. 8 spot.

Jordan Thompson will have to work hard for a favourable result, with a sole quarter-final appearance at the 2024 Paris Masters being his best result at this level. The 30-year-old can gain comfort from his 2024 title run at Los Cabos. After securing a clinical win against Perricard, he now takes on Tsitsipas for a chance to progress to the round of 16 for the first time at the venue.

In the pair’s last tour-level meeting over a year ago at the 2024 Australian Open, Thompson opened a first-set lead but failed to press home the advantage and lost 4-6, 7-6(6,) 6-2, 7-6(4). Winning against Tsitsipas in Europe will be a big challenge for Thompson. The Australian could push Tsitsipas to a decider, but the Greek’s clay court expertise will see him carry the day.
