Tsitsipas is a three-time champion at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Monte Carlo Masters 2025 is a prestigious tennis tournament for male professionals, played on outdoor clay courts. Marking its 118th edition, the tournament will take place at the Monte Carlo Country Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France—though it is traditionally associated with Monte Carlo, Monaco. It is part of the ATP Masters 1000 series on the 2025 ATP Tour.

The competition marks the beginning of the clay court season, with most of the top seeds ready to battle it out—except for World No. #2 Jannik Sinner, who remains sidelined as he serves a three-month suspension. Another top-10 player, World No. #4 Taylor Fritz, will also miss the event due to injury. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five title favourites heading into this ATP 1000 event.

Casper Ruud is one of the best tennis players on clay from the current generation, and despite poor routings in recent events, he continues to remain in the fourth position at the ATP Rankings. He shocked Novak Djokovic in semi-finals of the 2024 Monte Carlo tournament, before going down to eventual winner Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Ruud bounced back by triumphing at the Barcelona Open, Geneva Open, and advanced to the semis of the French Open. Marking his return to his favourite format, Ruud will be hoping to return to winning ways, go one step further and clinch his maiden title in Monte Carlo.

4. Stefanos Tsitsipas

Three-time champion at this venue, Stefanos Tsitsipas is already one of the most successful players to have graced the venue. The Greek demonstrated glimpses of his past, when he displayed an excellent combination of defense and attack to lift the Dubai Open. Returning to his favourite competition, Tsitsipas could become the most successful man in Monte Carlo history, second to only the legendary Rafael Nadal.

Alexander Zverev will be the top seed for the event, but has been struggling for the past couple of months since he made the Australian Open finals. He is yet to capture a title this season, despite the absence of World No. #1 Jannik Sinner.

Being the only top-10 player in the tournament, the German was the favourite to win the Argentina Open, Rio Open and Mexico Open, yet he failed to win more than two matches. As the clay court season officially kicks off, Zverev will be eager to reverse his fortunes and find form quickly.

Novak Djokovic’s hunt for a historic career 100th title nearly came to an end in Miami, but he fell short to 19-year-old sensation Jakub Mensik. The Serbian last won an ATP title at the US Open in 2023, and has struggled since, due to poor form and injury concerns. After a series of successive early exits, he displayed a strong performance at the Miami Open 2025, primarily relying on good serving.

In addition to his two titles in 2013 and 2015, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has consistently delivered deep runs at the Monte Carlo Masters. He finished runner-up in 2009 and 2012, reached the semifinals in 2008, 2010, and 2014, and made quarterfinal appearances in 2017 and 2019.

With only five men in history having captured three or more titles at the event, the Serbian great now has a golden opportunity to etch his name even deeper into the Monte Carlo record books.

Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t had the season many expected. For most players, winning a title and reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam would be considered a solid campaign. But by the lofty standards the Spanish sensation has set for himself, it’s been underwhelming.

Early exits in the Middle East and surprising defeats at Indian Wells and Miami have seen Alcaraz slide further down the ATP rankings. Despite having played only one match at Monte Carlo previously, Alcaraz remains one of the top favourites for this edition. However, recent results suggest that even he is not immune to early upsets.
