Tsitsipas survived Thompson, who took the opening set before the Greek and No. 6 seed fought back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. It may not have been the ideal way to kickstart his title defence, but Tsitsipas found his rhythm late in the second set. The thrice Monte-Carlo champion won seven of the last nine games to move into the third round and go up 4-1 against Thompson.

A day later, Nuno Borges saw off a determined Pedro Martinez on Court 9, winning 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4. Clocking 3 hours and eight minutes, the Borges-Martinez encounter was the longest match of Day 5. In the tussle between the two unseeded players, Borges came out on top, aided by 49 winners and 10 aces.

The crucial break of serve in the ninth game of the deciding set hastened Borges’ march to victory on Wednesday.

On Thursday, World No. 8 Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on World No. 43 Nuno Borges for a place in the last eight. Should Tsitsipas move past Borges, it will be his fourth quarter-final appearance in the ATP 1000 event.  

It will be the second time these two players are squaring off on the ATP Tour. Their previous meeting was at the ATP Masters 1000 Rome in 2023. Tsitsipas secured a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win over the Belgian on that occasion. The 26-year-old Tsitsipas is chasing history in Monte-Carlo, where a fourth title will make him the second most successful player after Rafael Nadal.

Top seed and World No. 2 Alexander Zverev‘s elimination from the tournament has made this goal much easier for Tsitsipas. Matteo Berrettini recorded the biggest win of his career by defeating Zverev 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Novak Djokovic lost his first match against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 6-4, further increasing Tsitsipas’ chances of retaining the title.

On the other side of the draw, second seed Carlos Alcaraz avoided becoming a casualty when he came from behind to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 against Francisco Cerundolo.
