Both players won their respective semi-finals to fight for the title.

Novak Djokovic is now one win away from a calendar grand slam after moving into the 2021 US Open finals. The World No.1 had to scratch and claw his way into the finals after playing out a thrilling 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Alexander Zverev on Friday.

The Serbian star knew that it would not be easy for him to defeat Zverev in the semi-finals. However, Djokovic had a relatively disappointing start to the clash after losing the first set 4-6, as the German tennis star came out firing on all cylinders.

However, Novak Djokovic kept this cool and rallied back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-4, taking control of the match. Djokovic’s tenacity and unpredictability on the court were too hot to handle for Zverev in the second and third sets of the US Open semi-final.

Zverev did bite back in the fourth set, claiming it 6-4 to setup a final set between the two. However, the Serbian showed impressive energy to come out strong in the fifth set and managed to get an early break after winning a 30-game rally.

He ended up dominating Zverev in the final set, claiming it to move onto the finals. After the match, speaking about the possibility of a calendar grand slam, Novak Djokovic said, “There's only one match left. All in, let's do it. I'm going to put my heart and my soul and my body and my head into that one. I'm going to treat the next match like it is the last match of my career.”

Medvedev powers his way to second final at Flushing Meadows

Daniil Medvedev setup a date with Novak Djokovic in the US Open final by getting a dominant straight-sets win over Canadian tennis star Felix Augar-Aliassime. The Russian won the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 and looked in control.

He started things off in an impressive fashion, as his powerful strokes were just too much to handle for the 12th seed. He won the first set 6-4 after, but did not have it that easy as the match moved along.

Augar-Aliassime proved to be difficult to break down in the second set. It went straight to the wire, but Medvedev managed to get a late break to barely win it by 7-5. After that exhausting set, the Canadian star’s energy seemed to have been drained.

Daniil dominated his way into winning the final set 6-2 and did not let the chance of a comeback to emerge. He ousted his opponent in just about every aspect during the clash, managing 12 aces and also boasting a better win percentage on first and second serves.

This will be Medvedev’s second US Open final after he came up short in 2019. He’ll be looking to beat Novak Djokovic to end his fairy-tale run in grand slams this year, on a high.
