This will be the eighth teenage Grand Slam final in the Open era.
British teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu reached the US Open final as her meteoric rise continued. She secured a stunning straight-set win over Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari at the Flushing Meadows in New York.
Raducanu, 18, extended her dream run with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in which her dominance again almost defied belief. She faced seven break points in her opening two service games. But she saw them off to hold both games and move into a 3-0 lead with a break sandwiched in-between.
Sakkari became frustrated with her inability to take her opportunities. In contrast to Sakkari's anxious demeanour, Raducanu seemed completely unflustered by the occasion. Both players were aiming to reach their maiden Grand Slam final. With a place in the US Open final beckoning, there were no signs of nerves as Raducanu sealed victory with a forehand volley. In the end, it turned out to be a straightforward victory for the British teenager.
She was ranked world no. 338 prior to the commencement of the Wimbledon. However, after garnering a lot of attention on the way to reaching the last 16 of the Wimbledon, Raducanu has jumped to the 150th spot. Now she is having a fairytale run at the US Open and is within touching distance of the trophy. In doing so, Emma Raducanu becomes the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final in 44 years.
Fernandez shocks Sabalenka
Earlier in the night, Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez sealed her place in the final by shocking Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Unseeded Fernandez won 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to edge a tense US Open semi-final.
The 19-year-old is currently world no. 73 and will also compete in her maiden Grand Slam final. The success of Raducanu and Fernandez caps a tournament where a host of youngsters have filled the void of several big names - in particular Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal - with superb performances.
Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, said Raducanu and Fernandez's success was a 'changing of the guard' moment. This will be the first teenagers Grand Slam final since the 1999 US Open when American hope Serena Williams beat Switzerland's Martina Hingis. Therefore, on Sunday, the tennis world is all set to witness the first Grand Slam teenagers final of the new millennium.
