Rinderknech raised his level in the second set, to which Alcaraz responded, saving two breakpoints at 5-6 to force a second-set tiebreak. The World No. 1 sealed the win on his second match point with a forehand winner.
A lighthearted exchange at the net saw Rinderknech asking if Alcaraz would let him win one day. The Frenchman trails the Spaniard 5-0 in their head-to-head.
After a successful fishing expedition in Doha, the World No. 1 will now look to reel in the 2026 Qatar Open trophy. Alcaraz owns ATP 500 trophies at six other venues but has yet to net one in the Middle East.
Now in his 59th week at No. 1, Alcaraz will continue his Qatar Open campaign against Valentin Royer. Making his debut in Doha, Royer blitzed fellow Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a 6-0, 6-2 rout that took just 62 minutes.
This will be a maiden clash between the two second-round contestants. It is a step up for Royer, who is facing a top-five player for the first time. The Frenchman will be the underdog on Wednesday when the two meet, an opportunity for Royer to test his mettle against the world’s best player.
