All you need to know about 2022 Wimbledon Championships

The world's oldest grand slam will miss record-winner Roger Federer for the first time in 23 years.

The 135th Wimbledon Championships begins on Monday, 27th June at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. This will be the first time that the tournament will have a schedule of play on Sunday, dubbed the ‘Middle Sunday’. Also, the world’s oldest grand slam will not carry any ranking points for this edition.

Eight-time champion - Roger Federer will miss his first Wimbledon in 23 years. Serb Novak Djokovic will be looking to make it four in a row at the SW19 while Rafael Nadal will be chasing his third Grand Slam of the season. Whereas on the women’s side, World no 1 Iga Swiatek would love to build on her 35-match winning streak. She faces competition from Tunisian Ons Jabeur, former Wimbledon champions Garbine Muguruza, Serena Williams as well as home-favourite Emma Raducanu.

The ladies’ singles final will be on Saturday, 9th July while the gentlemen’s singles final will be on the day after, Sunday, 10th July.

Who are the Indians participating in this year’s edition?

Only two Indians will be in action at the All-England Club. Sania Mirza will be making her final appearance at the Grand Slam after she announced that this will be her final season on tour. She will partner Czech Republic’s Lucie Hradecka in the women’s doubles. In the men’s section, Ramkumar Ramanathan will partner Bosnian Tomislav Brkic in the men’s doubles draw. 

Rohan Bopanna decided to give the tournament a miss after no ranking points are awarded while Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan fell short in the first qualifying round in the singles section. 

Both Indians will play their matches on Wednesday, 29th June. The exact timings will be released the night before.

Where can you watch Wimbledon in India?

Matches will be telecast live on Star Sports Network and Disney+ Hotstar. Star Sports Select 1 and Select 2 will be the two channels showing select matches along with their respective HD channels.
