Novak Djokovic survives a scare to enter semifinals of 2022 Wimbledon

The top seed came close to facing elimination in a high-octane quarter-final tie.

Expectations from the Wimbledon Championships are always high. The 2022 edition of the prestigious Grand Slam is delivering on all those expectations. There is sensational tennis action across the board. The fast-paced grass-court action continued on Tuesday as the big guns came out to play. In one of the most entertaining matches of this year’s tournament, Novak Djokovic made an incredible comeback. He had to win his quarter-final tie against Jannik Sinner at the Centre Court by overcoming huge odds.

The top seed in Men’s Singles was staring at a shock defeat when his American opponent shot into a two-set lead. However, the Serbian, true to his nature, took his game to a high level to win the next three sets. Eventually, after a hard-fought match lasting three hours and 35 minutes, Djokovic won by 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against the tenth seed. The reigning champion makes his way into the semi-final and is two steps away from retaining his title.  

Ons Jabeur and Cameron Norrie head to the semis

Over at the Women’s Singles, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur has reached the semi-final of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The 27-year-old had to make a comeback after losing the first set to Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. She won the contest by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 scoreline and looks favourite to go all the way this year. Tatjana Maria of Germany will be her opponent in the next round. 

In the Men’s Singles, the hope of the United Kingdom, Cameron Norrie has reached the semi-final in his bracket. The British No.1 beat David Goffin by 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in three hours and 28 minutes of physically demanding tennis action at the No.1 Court. The ninth seed will, however, have his hands full in the next round as he comes up against Novak Djokovic. “It’s going to be tough. I’m going to have to improve a lot of things from today. I don’t think I’m going to have the chance to lose focus like I did today. I think I was a little bit fortunate,” Norrie was quoted as saying after the contest. 

Key Results Elsewhere

Second seeds and favourites for the Women’s Doubles title, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic have advanced to the semi-final. They overcame the challenge posed by Nicole Melichar-Martinez of the U.S.A and Ellen Perez of Australia by a 1-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-2 score. The duo will now face Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia in the penultimate contest.

Second seeds in the Men’s Doubles, Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic of Croatia took one hour and 39 minutes to dispose of their opponents in the quarter-final. They beat the German duo of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies in straight sets, thanks to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 score. Colombia’s Robert Farah and Juan Sebastián Cabal will aim to stop their dominance in the semi-final.
