Hello and welcome to Khel Now’s live blog for the Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev semi-final match at Wimbledon 2024. Please wait for the blog to load.

It is to be another semi-final showdown between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev for the second year in a row at Wimbledon. The Spaniard is a step closer to winning the French Open and Wimbledon trophies in the same season.

As has been the norm with Alcaraz at Wimbledon 2024, he was taken to four sets playing against American Tommy Paul. For the third time in a row, Alcaraz has been tested by his opponent. But the third held his nerve, rallying to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 triumph against the in-form Tommy Paul on Tuesday.

Following his three-hour, 11-minute comeback victory on Centre Court, Alcaraz has been kept busy with 10 hours of game time in the previous three rounds. The third seed was stretched to five sets by Frances Tiafoe on Friday, followed by a set match against Ugo Humbert that lasted three hours on Sunday.

Alcaraz is to face fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in a semi-final rematch from last season’s Wimbledon. Medvedev got the better of World No. #1 Jannik Sinner in a five-set match, 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, that took exactly four hours to wrap up.

The man from Moscow and the 2021 US Open champion sneaked into the last four relatively unnoticed. The World No. #5 reversed the result from their previous Grand Slam meeting at Melbourne, where the Italian subdued Medvedev in five sets to claim his maiden Grand Slam trophy.

It was just the season’s fourth loss for Jannik Sinner, even as Medvedev celebrated his first win over the Italian since the 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Miami final.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev preview

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz will be looking for a repeat of the 2023 result when he won his first Wimbledon title in his first trip to the title round. Should he win, Alcaraz will become the first Wimbledon champion from Spain since Rafael Nadal in 2010, along with becoming the first man from his country to win Wimbledon twice in a row.

In Medvedev’s case, reaching the finals will be a record in itself, making him the first Russian in the Open Era to do so. Alex Metreveli of the former Soviet Union reached the title round in 1973.

Former World No. #1 and second seed Novak Djokovic is through to the last four after first-time SW19 quarterfinalist Alex de Minaur pulled out of the tournament after injuring his hip in the fourth-round match against Arthur Fils. In the other quarter-final, Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz take on each other in a bid to reach the last four for the first time.

Prediction

The upcoming semi-final match between Alcaraz and Medvedev will be their third match on grass and at Wimbledon. Only a single game away lies the final at SW19. It will be a second time in the finals for Alcaraz, while it will be a first trip to the championship round for Medvedev.

After getting the better of Tommy Paul in the last 16, Alcaraz remains in possession of the Wimbledon trophy. The Spaniard has now moved to 16-2 at Wimbledon and a career win-loss of 17-3 (85%) on grass. Medvedev is 18-5 on Wimbledon’s iconic grass courts and 41-21 (66%) in his career.

Alcaraz is 2-0 in finals this season, while the opposite is true for Medvedev, who trails at 0-2. The Spaniard is an impressive 6-2 against top ten players, while Medvedev is locked at 3-3 against the ATP top ten.

Despite not winning a title since the 2023 Rome Masters, Medvedev remains as competitive as ever as Sinner found out. Having won three five-setters to Alcaraz’s two this year, Medvedev will back himself to win should the match go the distance.

Result: Daniil Medvedev to win in five sets.
