The Pakistan men’s volleyball team secured a surprise 3-0 win against an unbeaten Indian side in the quarter-final at the Asian Games 2026 on Thursday, October 1. The Green Shirts defeated their arch-rivals 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium.
It was a massive result for Pakistan, who are ranked 39th in the FIVB world rankings. The players were aware of the impact of their win, especially against their fiercest rivals. The Pakistani players broke out with wild celebrations after the full-time whistle.
Murad Khan punched the air before performing the ‘sujood’ – prostrating and touching the ground with one’s forehead – with his teammates. Setter Hamid Yazman bumped shoulders with a member of the Pakistani staff.

India entered the fixture as slight favourites, having not lost a single match in the group stage. The Men in Blue had beaten Vietnam and Hong Kong 3-0 before fighting back from 0-2 down to defeat Qatar 3-2. Despite being lower ranked in the FIVB world rankings, India were confident of beating Pakistan.
However, the Green Shirts, the Pool A runners-up, started the match on the front foot, clinching the opening set 25-19 in just 23 minutes. India fought back in the second set, briefly going ahead 16-13. However, Pakistan levelled the score at 19-19 before winning 25-23 in 34 minutes.

India needed a win in the third set to keep their gold medal hopes alive. However, Pakistan pulled away to an 8-4 lead before winning 25-18 in just 25 minutes, securing a historic win. This was the second consecutive Asian Games edition in which India lost to Pakistan.
