Aman Sehrawat is also India’s first medallist in wrestling at Paris.
Aman Sehrawat created history for India at the Olympics by winning a bronze for the nation in his debut Games at Paris Olympics 2024. He brought India its first medal in wrestling, which was much needed after Vinesh Phogat’s heartbreak, in the ongoing edition. To accomplish such a phenomenal feat at the age of just 21 is a testament to the Indian’s perseverance and dedication.
With this, Aman has also now become India’s youngest-ever medallist at the Olympics surpassing the record set by PV Sindhu at Rio 2016. Sindhu, who won silver in badminton at Rio, was 21 years 1 month and 4 days old when she clinched the silver medal. Aman is 21 years 0 months and 24 days old at the time of his medal.
Darian Cruz, who’s an American but moved to Puerto Rico, began the bout on an aggressive front knocking the Indian out of the patch to open his account. However, this was followed by a swift response from Aman who managed to get hold of his rival’s back to grab a couple of points.
There were several attempts made by Puerto Rican to attack his opponent but each of them were resisted by the Indian. Just before the end of the first half, Aman managed to get hold of two more points to gain a healthy lead of 6-3.
Just when Cruz seemed to be on the backfoot, he twisted the Indian by the back to reduce the deficit. Flirting with the border line, Aman once again managed to get hold of his opponent to increase his lead. Things seemed to be going the Indian’s way with just a couple of minutes on the clock.
An incredible hold of the leg by the 21-year-old gave him another two points to go 10-5 up and he could see the bronze medal in sight already. Aman once again displayed remarkable defense and soon converted it into an attack position to get another two points up his sleeve.

With 30 seconds left, Aman once again knocked Cruz out of the area to lead 13-5. Despite the Puerto Rican’s efforts, the Indian was too good for him in the end to emerge victorious by a massive margin to win India their first wrestling medal at the 2024 Games.
India continued their remarkable legacy in wrestling, having won a medal in the discipline each time since 2008. Aman Sehrawat won an Olympic medal at his debut Games and has given a lot of reassurance to the nation’s future in wrestling.
Earlier yesterday, Aman began with a couple of exceptional wins against North Macedonian Vladimir Egorov and 2022 World Championship silver medallist Abakarov Zelimkhan in the round of 16 and quarter-final respectively. He won both his bouts by technical superiority.
He then had face first seed Japanese Rei Higuchi. The 28-year-old’s story is one of ups and downs, having won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 but not qualified for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. However, Higuchi has been in prime form, here at Paris. And that was there for everyone to see as the Japanese crushed Aman’s hopes for a gold/silver at the Paris Games.
