WWE superstars are widely popular and have great fan bases across the world. They gained popularity showcasing great in-ring skills, microphone skills, charismatic looks and their in-ring characters. However, some of the WWE stars go through a character change, which could be more successful than their old ones. Here are the top 10 best character changes in WWE history.
10. Bayley
Bayley started her main roster run with the fan-favorite “Hugger” gimmick, where she hugs people and comes out with sky dancers. However, she turned heel by changing her looks, haircut and finisher. She destroyed the inflatable sky dancers and adopted the “Role Model” gimmick. The change in character has made her one of the most undeniable heel wrestlers and helped her become Bayley two Belts with SmackDown and WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
9. Becky Lynch
Becky Lynch made her WWE main roster debut as the Irish Lass Kicker for the first three-four years from 2015 to 2018. In late 2018, Lynch drastically transformed her character from The Irish Lass Kicker to The Man. The change in character was a huge success and she reached great heights. She went on to the main event WrestleMania, won the Raw and SmackDown Championship at the same time, and is the greatest female star of this generation.
8. Cody Rhodes
Cody Rhodes went through a lot of changes in characters from Dashing to Undashing to Beard Rhodes to Stardust to The American Nightmare. However the transformation from the most controversially trolled Stardust gimmick to The American Nightmare remains epic. Rhodes not only changed his character but also had evolved into a greater star. The character change made him place in the top card and as the top babyface of the company.
7. Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt made his WWE debut under the ring name Husky Harris, who is a rookie in NXT and was the secondary member of Team Nexus. While he returned after years, Husky Harris was repackaged as Bray Wyatt “The Eater’s of the World”. He took another break and returned with a new character of the Firefly Funhouse Host and The Fiend. Wyatt’s every character changes were creatively one of the best transformations of all time
6. Triple H
Triple H made his WWE debut under the name Hunter Hearst Helmsley with the Connecticut Blue Blood gimmick with a long coat and a stick in his hands. He then shortened his ring name to Triple H formed D Generation X, won the King of the Ring tournament, which made him the King of Kings and later The Game in 2000s. The change in character and Gimmick made him the 14-time World Champion and one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
5. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Steve Austin made his WWF debut as The Ringmaster, which was too weak and called for a change in character, which made him “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The Stone Cold gimmick turns fearless and does whatever he thinks and wants to do. The change in gimmick made him the top star of the company and reached superstardom.
4. The Rock
The Rock made his pro-wrestling debut under the name Rocky Maivia, which is a Blue Chipper Character as a face. However in the late 1990’s after turning heel, he refused to use the Rocky Maivia name and billed as The Rock. The change in character rants the audience, bullying his opponents and interviewers. This played out well that despite his cocky character, he became the fan favourite as The People’s Champ and The Great One.
3. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns adopted the Big Dog character for almost eight years. He was highly successful as a babyface Big Dog, however the transformation to the heel Tribal Chief has made the fans forget his previous character. Reigns is now on a different level as a heel and has become one of the hard to beat wrestlers in the company. The character change made him the longest reigning Undisputed WWE Universal Champion with more than 1300+ days reign.
2. John Cena
John Cena’s transformation from Doctor of Thuganomics to the Leader of Cenation is one of the greatest character changes, which made him the GOAT of pro-wrestling and as the 16-time World Champion. The babyface character is so successful that even Chairman Vince McMahon refused to turn it down.
1. The Undertaker
The Undertaker debuted under the Deadman gimmick with The Old West Mortician and was associated with funerals, undead, caskets and others. However, his alter ego character evolved in 2000s that he became The American Badass and The Big Evil, who drove motorcycles to the ring with coolers, bandanas, necklaces and sporty looks. However after the feud with Kane gave the rebirth of The Deadman gimmick with a lot of supernatural powers.
