WWE is one of the biggest professional wrestling promotions in the world, which is known for some of the biggest events and innovative matches. One such match is the Elimination Chamber match, which was created by Triple H and introduced by Eric Bischoff in 2002.
It features a giant chain-linked circular steel structure, which encloses the ring and multiple wrestlers. Here we take a look at how the Elimination Chamber matches work.
Elimination Chamber Match
Elimination Chamber matches is basically an elimination match featuring multiple wrestlers locked under a giant steel structure. Usually the chamber matches feature six or more wrestlers, where four wrestlers will be locked inside the glass container within the steel-chained chamber and two or three of them will start the match.
Every five minutes a wrestler will be released from the locked up glass container on a random basis to officially enter the match. There is no disqualification inside the chamber, and the only way to win is by either pinfall or submission.
If a wrestler is pinned or submitted, he will be eliminated from the match and will be sent out of the steel structure. The last one to survive will be declared the winner and would be given a prize of a championship or a guaranteed championship match.

Match History
Triple H created the match and Eric Bischoff introduced the match in 2002. For the first few years, Elimination Chamber matches were held at different pay-per-views such as Survivor Series in 2002, SummerSlam in 2003, New Year’s Revolution in 2005 & 2006, December to Dismember in 2006, No Way Out in 2008 & 2009.
However, after the success of the match, the company made a pay-per-view under the name and it started occurring annually. In 2018, WWE also opened the door for the Women’s Elimination Chamber matches.
The majority of the matches inside the chamber were held for the primary world titles- Eight matches for the WWE Championship, and seven matches for the World Heavyweight Championship.
However, ECW World Championship, Tag Team Championship, Women’s Championship, United States Championship, and Intercontinental Championship were also defended inside. Ten times the company used Elimination Chamber matches to pick up the #1 contender, to provide a guaranteed title shot either at WrestleMania or immediately following it.
So far WWE has hosted 34 Elimination Chamber matches with 28 men’s matches and 6 women’s matches. This year’s Elimination Chamber features two chamber matches one for the men and other for the women for the guaranteed title shot at WrestleMania 40.
