The former Champion provides an update on her WWE future.
Our latest WWE rumor roundup might have provided some speculation and fan theories for the departure and return of a few WWE superstars. As for former WWE Champion Asuka, there is no guesswork, as she addressed the speculation about her WWE future.
Following her loss against IYO SKY at Backlash in May, two longtime friends embraced in the ring. The emotional moment looked like a farewell from the former World Champion, who then appeared in a backstage segment with Sky on the following edition of Raw.
The segment was her last appearance on WWE programming. The Japanese Wrestler now provided an encouraging update.
Asuka confirms she has not left WWE or quit wrestling
Recently, a fan asked Asuka on X (Twitter) if reports about her leaving WWE were true. The fan also asked if she was simply taking a break. Asuka gave a direct response: “I haven’t left the group. I haven’t quit.”
The star holds the record as the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Winner back in 2018. She also won Money in the Bank ladder match in 2020 and held four different titles in WWE. With such an illustrious career, it’s great to see her hunger to be part of the Stamford-based promotion once again.
WWE’s take on Asuka
Asuka joined the WWE main roster back in 2017 and has won WWE championships thrice in her career so far. While the star was one of the most athletic wrestlers in the industry, her recent actions certainly raised questions about her future with the WWE.
But now that she has shown her intent to be part of the program, it is interesting to see how the authorities read the lines. WWE commentary also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding her future. During the May 11 episode of RAW that featured her last appearance, Michael Cole said that Asuka’s future was “currently up in the air.”
But as per the most recent WrestleVotes Radio episode, there was discussion over the possible return of Asuka. Joey Votes learned that there is genuine interest from the program.
“I know they want her back. I know this is not a closed-door type of situation. When she’s ready, they’re ready to get her back. She’s one of those that can pop up on a moment’s notice, and with her being back in the States, she’ll let them know, ‘Hey, I’m ready to work again,’ and they’ll be happy to take her back.”
Although there is no concrete date or event set for the return of The Empress of Tomorrow, fans will be excited to see her back in the ring.
Asuka’s potential role in WWE
At this stage, there is no officially announced storyline or match for the former Champion. Any specific opponent or WrestleMania program would therefore be speculation. However, her status leaves several creative possibilities open.
WWE could use Asuka as a special-attraction return where she could return for selected major events or important storylines. Even her experience could lead to a completely new role where the former champion can also be used outside of a full-time in-ring role.
If the Empress of Tomorrow prefers another active role, she could immediately enter stories involving the upper portion of the women’s division, looking at her status and accomplishments, or even a reunion with IYO SKY will also be on the cards, considering how things ended between the two.
