“Big Match John” is a 16-time World Champion
John Cena last headlined the 2021 SummerSlam on August 21 in Las Vegas. But that’s nothing new for Cena, who has headlined all of WWE’s biggest events over the past two decades. Even though Cena is merely a part-time WWE wrestler due to his film career, there is a lot of expectation following his formal retirement announcement.
So, Cena has a long history of fighting in 15 SummerSlam matches. Being one of the top guys in the industry, the fans expect Cena to have a decent WWE SummerSlam win/loss record but that is not the case. John Cena is not even among the top crop for win/loss records in the SummerSlam PPV.
John Cena now has a 5-10 record at the PPV, which reflects his 5 victories and 10 defeats. Since his debut at the PPV in 2004, Cena has appeared on the SummerSlam marquee an astonishing six times.
Notably, 10 of his 15 SummerSlam battles have been for the WWE Championship, which is an impressive accomplishment for the ‘Leader of the Cenation’.
Cena’s WWE Summerslam record
Despite being on the WWE roster in 2003, the ‘Leader of the Cenation’ was not allowed to participate in the PPV that year. He would wrestle Booker T the following year at SummerSlam.
Cena won his first SummerSlam bout of the year, a Best of Five against Booker T for the WWE United States Championship. By 2005, WWE had propelled Cena to new heights by crowning him WWE Champion.
John Cena fought Chris Jericho and put his championship on the line at the PPV, which he finally defended successfully.
Cena’s losing streak began at a 2011 PPV; the match for the Undisputed WWE Championship included Triple H as a special guest referee and had a dramatic conclusion.
Cena’s losing run ended in 2017 when he defeated Baron Corbin, marking his 14th appearance for the PPV and making him the wrestler with the most SummerSlam appearances.
Then he last fought Roman Reigns at WWE Summerslam after making a dramatic entrance at Money in the Bank, which culminated in a match at WWE SummerSlam 2021 that Roman Reigns won.
