The two stars will clash in Atlanta next month!

On the June 16 episode of Monday Night Raw, the newly crowned World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther, was celebrating his win when WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg crashed his celebration ceremony.

The two stars had a fiery segment at Bad Blood 2024 where the Ring General mocked Goldberg, calling him a ‘one-trick pony.’ The segment went sideways as the Champion questioned Goldberg’s ability as a father, which led to the Hall of Famer jumping the barricade but was ultimately stopped by security.

The Hall of Famer first congratulated the Champion before reminding him of the segment in Atlanta, Georgia, with him and his family, and vowed to end it all in Atlanta. Goldberg stated that while the Champion started it, he will make sure to end it all in Atlanta.

The Ring General will now battle the Hall of Fame in his first title defense at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, 2025, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

After the match was made official for SNME, the Ring General also took to his Instagram, seemingly unfazed by the upcoming title defense, as he teased Goldberg for his lack of stamina inside the ring. “I’m next …. guess I can spare 3 minutes.” Gunther said in a post after the encounter on Raw.

Why is Gunther vs Goldberg for the title a bad idea?

The promtoion has long had the plans for a match between the two, while WWE has not confirmed it, this is likely Goldberg’s retirement match, as he has spoken about a final match in the promotion in 2025, and Fightful Select also reported that the HOF’s retirement match is going down at SNME on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia.

As Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful pointed out during his livestream that this will be Goldberg’s second title match in a row and his sixth title match in his last seven matches. In his most recent match, he suffered defeat against Roman Reigns, the Universal title was on the line for the match.

Additionally, of his last six matches, five of which were title matches, he has only won two, one of which was a Universal title win against The Fiend, the other one being a non-title match against Bobby Lashley. Even in kayfabe world a title shot after such a long break, without a proper storyline or history it doesn’t really makes sense for this to be a title clash.

The confrontation and bad blood between the two stars culminating in a single match, might have made sense. WWE even did the same in the feud between John Cena and R-Truth at the May 24 edition of SNME.

Even in the context of kayfabe, What happens if Goldberg wins, a rematch at SummerSlam? Wouldn’t it just be horrible for Gunther given his character, he was already made to tap out against Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41.

Losing at SNME after recently regaining the title against the veteran who has been inactive for almost three years wouldn’t look great for the face of Monday Night Raw.

On the other hand, if Gunther wins and this is infact his retirement match, what kind of send off would it be for the WCW legend, going off with two back to back title losses, the second one in a town which he has deep connections with.

Additonally, Goldberg’s last win was in 2021 against Bobby Lashley and his last win before that was in 2020 against the Fiend for the title as mentioned before. Not to mention him losing a world title match to Bobby Lashley, to Drew McIntyre to Braun Strowman in his previous outings which has been noted above.

What do you think about the match and what will happen if Goldberg wins the title? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section.
