Will John Cena appear on WWE SmackDown tonight (May 2, 2025)?

Tonight’s episode of SmackDown will emanate from the Wells Fargo Arena!

Within just one week’s time, the current Unidsputed WWE Champion John Cena is set to defend the title against a familiar foe from his prime, Randy Orton. The two stars will battle in the main event of Backlash 2025 PLE.

The 2025 edition of the PLE will take place on Saturday, May 10, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The promotion has also announced a singles match between Gunther and Pat McAfee, along with a Women’s IC title clash between Lyra Valkyria (c) and Becky Lynch.

Cena recently won the title at WrestleMania 41, breaking the tie with Ric Flair to become the one and only 17-time WWE World Champion. Cena pinned Cody Rhodes in the main event on April 20 to achieve this accolade.

However, before he could even properly celebrate his title win, a challenger appeared as Randy Orton ambushed Cena on Raw after WrestleMania, landing a vicious RKO, flatling the Champion. The two stars then engaged in a fiery segment last week on SmackDown where Orton once again came out on top.

The announcement of the match between the two at Backlash was also made during the segment. Fans are now on the edge of their seat to witness the match, possibly one last time the two legends will collide in the squared circle.

Ahead of tonight’s show, many fans are also wondering if John Cena will make an appearance to confront Orton and possibly attack him for the humiliation last week. However, Cena is not set to make an appearance tonight and will likely appear on the go-home show next week.

On the other hand, Randy Orton is advertised for the show and is expected to make an appearance, likely addressing the upcoming clash. It will be interesting to see what Orton has to say and whether Cena will attempt to ambush him during the promo.
