The American Nightmare regained the WWE title at SummerSlam!

After losing the title at WrestleMania 41, ‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes regained the title in a rematch, pinning John Cena to regain the WWE Championship in the main event of Night 2 of SummerSlam 2025.

Rhodes also buried the hatchet with Cena, and the two stars embraced after the match, showing mutual respect. On the August 8 fallout show of SmackDown, Cody even aided Cena when he was attacked by Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre.

This led to a tag team match between the two teams in the main event of the same show, which ended with McIntyre landing a brutal Claymore, sending Rhodes crashing into the announce desk. McIntyre on the next week’s show addressed the attack.

According to PWInsider, there’s backstage talk at WWE Raw that Cody Rhodes is expected to defend the WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza Premium Live Event.

According to an earlier report from Wrestlevotes on X, WWE will revive the “Wrestlepalooza” name for its yet-to-be-announced premium live event on September 20, 2025. This will go head-to-head with AEW’s All Out. The planned show on September 20 is the exact same day as AEW All Out in Toronto.

The name Wrestlepalooza was originally used for an ECW event series that ran from 1995 to 2000. Its most prominent edition was the 1998 pay-per-view, headlined by Shane Douglas defending the ECW World Heavyweight Championship against Al Snow. With WWE owning all ECW footage and intellectual property, reviving the brand is legally simple.

According to BodySlam, Many within WWE are pushing for John Cena to defeat Brock Lesnar in the match, though some influential voices in the company argue Lesnar should win, given that it marks his return after a two-year absence.
