Two suspected bookies were caught during IPL 2024 matches in Jaipur and Mumbai.

Under the surface of any sport, there exists a hidden world where bookies hold all the power. Engaging with these secretive individuals can seriously jeopardise the integrity of any sport. Their dishonesty tainted the spirit of fair play, reaching far and wide. Through their deceitful actions and shady transactions, they have transformed the once-sacred realm of sports into a mere spectacle. With all the sneaky tactics and dishonesty, their impact destroys the purity of any game, be it cricket or football.

The exciting Twenty20 matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have attracted cricket fans across the world since the tournament’s inception. A darker tale of corruption, however, lies underneath its ostentatious surface. The IPL has long been popular with bookies and betting syndicates. They can’t help but be drawn to it. With so much at stake, these crooked operators see every match as a massive chance. Efforts to limit the impact of match-fixing and spot-fixing incidents continue to take centre stage in the news. Some have questioned the IPL’s honesty because of the lure of quick riches that has stained its image.

IPL 2024: 2 suspected bookies caught by ACU during RR and MI home matches

Throughout the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been vigilantly looking for any signs of wrongdoing. In response to a new development, the ACU swiftly removed suspected bookmakers from two IPL locations. Rajasthan Royals were the particular targets of these occurrences. On March 28 in Jaipur, during a match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, two people were apprehended by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) on suspicion of being bookies.

The local police arrested them without delay. At the Wankhede Stadium on April 1, spectators watched Mumbai Indians take on Rajasthan Royals with heightened attention. Two more individuals were taken into custody from the MCA President’s Box and immediately turned over to the proper authorities on suspicion of being bookmakers. These occurrences display the continuous battle against corruption in cricket. However, the authorities had to let go of the 2 people as they did not find anything suspicious from their devices.

A Marine Drive Police Officer stated: “The two individuals were let go as nothing untoward was found on their electronic devices,” as quoted by The Hindu.

The BCCI official, on condition of anonymity, stressed that “The ACU, with the support of the BCCI machinery, is doing its best to keep corrupt elements away from the IPL.”

Bookies generally tend to go to the stadium and attend the games as fans. They usually want to take advantage of the eight-to-15-second gap between the live action at the stadium and the live televised action for betting.
