Indian Player Ratings: Pranjal Bhumij the man of the hour as Mumbai City rout ATK

The hosts couldn't make a comeback from the early deficit in the game against the Islanders. 

ATK’s playoffs hopes were crushed by an efficient Mumbai City side, who trampled them 1-3 at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Friday. A hat-trick from Modou Sougou was enough to help the Islanders progress into the knockout stages, while drowning Steve Coppell’s side’s ambitions.

Watch: Mumbai City FC 3-1 ATK highlights

Here are our  Indian player ratings for the game:

ATK

Arindam Bhattacharya- 6.0

Arindam had a difficult night because of Mumbai’s unpredictability in attack. He was fazed by Sogou’s clinical ability, conceding the first goal cheaply by letting a weak shot go past him.

Bhattacharya couldn’t do much about the second or third goals, but somewhat made up for his errors with some nice saves, including a terrific one late in the game to save his side from being further humiliated.

Pritam Kotal- 5.0

The experienced right-back was given nightmares by the much younger Pranjal Bhumij, being forced to stay alert by his pace. Kotal was beaten for pace and outwitted on multiple occasions and made a rash, unnecessary challenge leading to the first goal.

However, he was decent going forward and somewhat redeemed himself with an assist, when his curling cross met Andre Bikey’s header. Substituted immediately afterwards.

Arnab Mondal- 4.5

Mondal was troubled by the lingering presence of Sougou and had many problems keeping him at bay. While his distribution was good and he also made six clearances, he got outwitted by Sougou, who floated past him to score the first goal.

Despite being a strong defender, his pace and intelligence was below-par as Issoko easily blazed past him to deliver the cross for the second. He also lost track of the striker for his hat-trick and was left exhausted after the game.

Ricky Lallawmawma- 5.0

Ricky wasn’t at his defensive best against Arnold Issoko, whose clever movement caused him a lot of headache. The left-back was caught out of position multiple times, causing critical damage when Issoko whizzed past him to assist the second goal.

Going forward, Ricky did put in a few crosses, even playing a clever pass allowing Kalu Uche to get a free shot at goal, but couldn’t produce anything effective for his side.  

Eugeneson Lyngdoh-  6.0

In his first start of the season, Lyngdoh gave a composed performance on an otherwise disappointing night for ATK. He distributed the ball well, playing in some clever balls forward and recording a 79% passing accuracy from 67 passes.

The former Bengaluru FC man also took a solid shot from distance, which tested Amrinder Singh’s resolve and kept on pegging his team forward. Substituted after the hour mark, presumably due to exhaustion.

Jayesh Rane- 5.5

Jayesh was bound to have a tough time against the returning Subhasish Bose and had issues creating big chances, despite getting a lot of time on the ball. Rane’s crosses were very unconvincing, but he did create one chance when he cleverly passed the ball to Edu Garcia inside the box.

In the second half, he was extremely ineffective and even scuffed a big chance, when Garcia’s brilliant pass found him through on goal, but he couldn’t control it. Subbed after that.

Balwant Singh- 4.5

The striker returned to the lineup and didn’t justify his selection with another frustrating performance. Balwant looked out of place on the left, often drifting into the middle to create something, but was ousted by the strong Mumbai defence.

He did have a header saved brilliantly in the second half, but he remained extremely ineffective in front of goal.

Substitutions

Ankit Mukherjee- 5.5

He was brought on for Kotal to add energy and pace to the right, but was equally poor defensively, letting Bipin Singh get past him numerous times and put in some dangerous crosses, with one almost leading to a goal.

Pronay Halder- 5.5

Picked up his customery yellow card after coming on and couldn’t really create anything for his side.

Komal Thatal-  6.0

Komal was quite promising on the right flank, making a few exciting runs in the final third. However, he was unable to get the goals and was frustrated by the physical Mumbai side.

Mumbai City FC

Amrinder Singh- 6.5

Amrinder proved his prowess in goal, proving his confidence in form with another commendable performance. He made a few solid saves, including a superb diving effort to deny Uche in the first half.

Amrinder maintained his calm in the second half and despite not being able to get a clean-sheet, did well to keep his defence composed under pressure.

Souvik Chakrabarti- 7.0

The right-back was quite assertive of himself on his return to the Salt Lake Stadium, keeping Balwant completely neutralized on his flank. He also dealt with Ricky’s threat pretty well, while providing a key pass for the second goal.

Chakrabarti made three interceptions, three tackle and eleven clearances and despite picking up a yellow card, gave a solid performance to help his side get back to winning ways.  

Anwar Ali- 6.5

The experienced defender proved his knowledgable output by dealing with Uche’s threat pretty well, not getting unfazed by the clinical striker’s threat. He stuck close to Uche and diminished his effectiveness with a strong performance, making eight clearances and two tackles to avert danger. Ali also helped his side seal the deal towards the end and not crumble to pressure.

Subhasish Bose- 6.5

In his return to the starting lineup, Bose looked quite unfit and not as alert as he’s been throughout the season. However, he still used his intelligence to keep Rane at bay and despite not being quick enough, his clever positioning and defensive effort helped his side. Subhashish made seven clearances, making sure his side get the much-needed victory.

Sehnaj Singh- 7.0

Sehnaj maintained his discipline in the middle, keeping ATK’s midfielders at bay throughout the game. Singh made ten clearances, along with a few decent tackles and blocks to keep his side in control and nullify ATK’s threat through the middle.

Pranjal Bhumij- 7.5

The youngster made a surprising start against ATK and took full advantage of his opportunity. He was like a pocket dynamite on the left flank, moving forward with much vigour and showing a lot of skill and pace as well.

Bhumij dribbled past Kotal multiple times and more importantly created a beautiful assist, when his sweet lofted ball perfectly found Sougou to score his first. Substituted after picking up a knock.

Substitutions

Bipin Singh- 6.5

Bipin was quite dangerous against his former side after coming on, being an electric figure on the left wing. He played in a terrific cross which almost resulted in the goal afterwards, while taking an ambitious shot towards the end to round off an impressive cameo.

Raynier Fernandes-  NA

Came on too late to have an impact in the game.
