After a successful Asian Games, the Indian para-contingent made history with their best-ever performance at the Asian Para Games. In recent years, the increasing popularity of para-sports in India has been evident, resulting in the emergence of world-class athletes in various sports. The rise of para-sports in India is remarkable, with exceptional performances in world championships in athletics, shooting, badminton, archery, and other sports.

The transformation was particularly noticeable during the 2020 Paralympics, where India secured a record 19 medals. This time at the Asian Para Games 2023, India sent a record number of 309 athletes participating across 17 sports. Medals were won in 11 sports, constituting a 64.7 percent success rate thereby exceeding the 100 medals, achieving a historic milestone with 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze.

Notably, India dominated in athletics with 55 medals, followed by badminton with 21 and archery with seven. There have been significant improvements in various sports, although swimming disappointed this time and affected India’s chances of a top 4 finish. In the inaugural edition, India won 14 medals in only four sports: athletics, badminton, powerlifting, and wheelchair fencing. The solitary gold came from Jagseer Singh in Men’s triple jump in F-46 category.

In the second edition, India secured 33 medals across five sports: athletics, badminton, powerlifting, judo, and swimming, with gold medalists including Amit Kumar Saroha, Sharad Kumar, and Parul Parmar. The following edition witnessed a substantial increase in medals, jumping from 33 to 72, with medals earned in nine different sports.

In the fourth edition, India once again achieved their best-ever finish, crossing the 100-medal mark and becoming the 7th nation to do so. The progress of para-sports in India is undeniable, and the future looks promising.
