Indian contingent continued its sublime run at the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya as it secured its first gold medal thanks to the Indian women’s cricket team.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side defended their title as the reigning champions by defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the gold medal match, taking India’s medal tally to seven, of which five have come in shooting (four silver, one bronze).
India also bagged a bronze in MMA with Suchika Tariyal coming third in the women’s 60kg category.

The country assured another medal in badminton as the Indian men’s team beat Japan 3-0 to enter the semi-final of the men’s team event.
India’s contingent has fetched seven medals—one gold, four silver, and two bronze—and is eighth in the medal tally.

Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Mane qualified for the gold medal match by finishing second in the qualification round of mixed team 10m air rifle event, but faltered in the final.

If one Harmanpreet smashed the Sri Lankan women’s cricket team to take the gold, the other Harmanpreet-led hockey team annihilated Sri Lanka 16-1 in the men’s pool A encounter. India had a better conversion rate in shots on target to goals converted and would have pleased Craig Fulton.
It was a mixed day for India from other sports, as the Indian men’s team showed their class against hosts Japan in the badminton quarter-finals, while the women’s team lost against Japan 1-3.
Star Shuttler PV Sindhu lost the first game against Akane Yamaguchi, and the team lost the momentum. The doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Tanvi Sharma pulled one back, but India failed to win any singles as they were knocked out.
The men’s team assured a medal with Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and the pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, giving no chance for their Japanese opponents to move into the top four.
In Wushu, Roshbina Devi moved into the semi-finals of women’s 60kg, assuring a medal, while Aryan lost to his Uzbekistan opponent in the men’s 56kg quarter-finals.
Chetan Bhatt missed a bronze medal in the men’s karate event by the senshu rule, which meant if the match is tied, then the fighter who scored the first point in the bout is declared the winner.

It was unfortunate for Chetan, who deserved a medal for doing everything he could. In the women’s karate event, Alisha fell short in the round of 16. Big disappointments in swimming, sepak takraw, and soft tennis, as India couldn’t come closer to challenging the medal winners.

Weightlifting at the continental tournament will begin on Wednesday, September 23. Gyaneshwari Yadav will be in action in the women’s 53kg final while the women’s 49kg final is also on the cards.
India women’s hockey team will play against Thailand in their Pool B match at 11:30 am IST. They will aim to finish in the top two teams of their pool to reach the semi-finals.
The match also matters for India’s chances of making it to the LA28 Olympics, as the Asian Games champions will get a direct qualification spot for the quadrennial tournament.
