Asian Games 2026: Updated medal tally after Day 3, September 22
China have crossed the 50-medal mark, with hosts Japan not far behind
India finally opened its gold medal account on Day 3 of the Asian Games 2026, and it arrived in the nation’s most preferred discipline. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led women’s cricket team thrashed Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final to retain their Asian Games title.
Smriti Mandhana’s fifty was backed by useful contributions from Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh to lift India to a record 216/3. India’s spinners then ran through Sri Lanka, bowling them out for just 69 in 15.4 overs.
The gold took India’s overall tally to seven, with five of those coming from shooting and one from MMA. India also confirmed a medal in badminton, as the men’s team beat hosts Japan 3-0 in the quarter-final to guarantee at least a bronze and move into the semi-finals.
The women’s team, however, went the other way, losing 1-3 to Japan in their own quarter-final to bow out. Shooting couldn’t quite make it a perfect week, with Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Mane finishing fourth in the 10m air rifle mixed team final.

The pair had topped their qualification group in strong form, but faded in the medal round to finish on 376.3. Elsewhere, India’s boxing campaign got off to a solid start as Sakshi Chaudhary stunned Olympic bronze medallist Aira Villegas of the Philippines 5-0 in the women’s 51kg.
It wasn’t all good news, though, as India’s table tennis teams exited from the team event, karate’s Alisha Choudhary went out in the round of 16, and fencers Taniksha Khatri and Mitva Chaudhari were both eliminated in their individual epee campaigns.
The kabaddi team kept its unbeaten start going with a 63-31 rout of South Korea in the men’s group stage. Hence, Day 3 was an overall mixed bag day for India, with the gold medal coming on expected lines, but some disappointing results taking place in shooting and table tennis.

Japan had arguably its best day of the Games so far, winning gold in both swimming and karate. 17-year-old Shin Ohashi shared the men’s 100m breaststroke title after clocking 58.64, with China’s Dong Zhihao for gold in a rare dead heat.
Kakeru Nishiyama retained the men’s individual kata crown in karate, extending Japan’s winning streak in that event to three straight editions.
The home nation also picked up silver in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay behind China despite setting a national record, and bronze through Mio Narita in the women’s 200m individual medley.
China extended their domination at the top, surpassing the half-century mark. They won the triathlon mixed relay gold, with Japan settling for silver.
Kazakhstan continue to give a tough fight to South Korea, with both nations tied on the gold medal count, but the latter is well ahead as far as the overall tally is concerned.
Thailand, with four gold medals, retains its place inside the top five of the standings. India improved its position from #12 to #8 after winning a gold medal in cricket, but a lot more work has to be done if the country wishes to break into the top four.
