Asian Games 2026: India's next-gen women's singles badminton stars ready for breakout

India has the opportunity to dominate the women’s singles department in the future

As Asian Games 2026 approaches fast, Indian women’s singles has revolved around Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu for over a decade. The duo transformed Indian badminton, winning major titles and medals on the biggest stages. Yet, a question has lingered: Who comes next?

A new generation is emerging

Now, the wait can be over soon; India has a young crop of women’s singles players emerging, with most of them still under 20. The year 2026 has been a breakthrough for our women’s singles, as India has already won four women’s singles titles this year, with four different players. It also marks the first time anyone apart from Saina and Sindhu has won the title.

Devika Sihag (Thailand Masters), Tanvi Sharma (Taipei Open), and Ashmita Chahila (Korea Open) have all won Super 300 titles this year. We also have Unnati Hooda, who has been on the international circuit for some time and is already inside the world’s top 25.

Isharani Baruah reached the final of the Vietnam Open, while Mansi Singh has recently started making waves on the international circuit by beating several promising players. Her recent win over former Junior World Champion Xu Wenjing shows her potential.

Then there are youngsters like Shreyanshi Valishetty, Rakshita Ramraj, and Anmol Kharb, who are all showing promise.

India currently has nine players ranked inside the BWF World Ranking top 50, more than any other nation. If this continues, it may not be long before India has over 10 players in the top 50.

Of course, not every young player will become a world-class star. That is how sport works. But, having so many players emerging through at the same time gives India a much better chance of finding multiple elite players.

Promising Junior Results

India had an all-Indian women’s singles final at the Asian U17 Championships in 2025, when Diksha Sudhakar faced Lakshya Rajesh. A year later, the same thing happened again, with Tanvi Patri taking on Shaina Manimuthu in the 2026 final. Both players have already won the U15 title and are currently 15 years old

Another encouraging sign is that this talent is not coming from just one or two academies. Young players are emerging from different academies across the country. Thus, the talent pool is now becoming much more diversified.

The next two years will be important. By the time the post-2028 transition arrives, several of these youngsters should have gained valuable senior-level experience.

Optimistic signs for Women’s Doubles?

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, both still only 23, have already established themselves as an important pair for India. They recently won bronze at the World Championships after defeating a couple of top 10 pairs on their way to the semi-finals. They will play a crucial role for India in the team events.

Tanisha Crasto is another young doubles player who could be an important option for the second women’s doubles spot in team events. Her mixed doubles experience could also prove useful.

Another promising junior Angel Punera and Aanya Bisht have shown potential. They beat last year’s Asian Junior Champion, and now all eyes are on how they fare at the Junior World Championships. Aditi Deepak Raj is another young doubles player with the potential to make an impact.

Transition will be the key

India still has plenty of work to do. Junior success does not guarantee senior success, and the transition from junior to senior is a crucial stage for every country.

But the signs are certainly positive. For years, Indian women’s singles was about Saina and Sindhu. Now, a whole group of youngsters is waiting to grab that opportunity. If even a few of these youngsters reach their potential, the post-2028 era could be the beginning of India’s domination in the women’s singles category.
