India concluded their Asian Games 2026 campaign with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze

India entered the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 with a 503-athlete contingent. The Indian contingent featured 269 men and 234 women. India competed across 36 disciplines after surfing was added to the original list.

India’s campaign produced medals across a broad range of sports. Traditional strengths such as athletics and shooting remained important. At the same time, India produced historic results in archery, golf, soft tennis, sepaktakraw and mixed martial arts.

Here is a sport-by-sport review of India’s campaign:

Archery

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Archery was one of India’s most successful sports at Aichi-Nagoya. India finished with five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

India won gold in the men’s compound team, women’s compound team, mixed compound team and women’s recurve team events. Ganesh Thirumuru also won bronze in men’s individual compound.

The recurve campaign became particularly significant. Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod won India’s first Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team event.

Kumkum then produced the biggest individual result. The 17-year-old defeated South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a shoot-off to win women’s individual recurve gold.

Neeraj Chauhan added bronze after defeating fellow Indian Dhiraj Bommadevara 6-4. Dhiraj had earlier won silver in the men’s team and mixed team events. India therefore collected medals across both compound and recurve archery.

Artistic Gymnastics

India had a solitary representative in artistic gymnastics, with Pranati Nayak competing in the women’s vault and all-around events.

Nayak faced a strong Asian field and did not win a medal. Her participation nevertheless gave India representation in a sport where the country has had limited depth at major continental competitions.

Athletics

Athletics was one of India’s biggest medal-producing sports. The contingent competed across track events, field events, race walking, combined events and relays.

Gulveer Singh was among the leading performers. He won silver in the 10,000m and 1,500m and bronze in the 5,000m.

Ancy Sojan won silver in the women’s long jump. Sarvesh Kushare took silver in the men’s high jump. Murali Sreeshankar also won silver in the men’s long jump.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor won silver in the men’s shot put. Yashvir Singh took silver in the javelin.

Parul Chaudhary won bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m. She also played a prominent role in India’s distance-running campaign.

India won gold in the women’s 4x400m relay. The men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x100m relays also won bronze. The athletics campaign produced medals across almost every category of the sport.

Badminton

Badminton produced a medal for India. The men’s team won bronze after reaching the podium in the team competition.

India’s singles and doubles players also made deep runs in the individual events. PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda, however, were eliminated in the women’s singles quarter-finals.

Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also exited in the mixed doubles quarter-finals. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost in the women’s doubles quarter-finals.

Boxing

Boxing delivered three gold medals and three bronze medals. Lovlina Borgohain won gold in the women’s 75kg category.

Parveen Hooda won the women’s 65kg title. Ankush Panghal added gold in the men’s 80kg category.

Narender Berwal won bronze in the men’s +90kg division. Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya also won bronze. The three gold medals made boxing one of India’s major contributors during the final stages of the Games.

Cricket

Cricket produced two gold medals for India. The women’s team clinched gold after defeating Sri Lanka in the final. The men then completed the double on Saturday, beating Pakistan by 19 runs in the gold-medal match.

India scored 211/6, with Abhishek Sharma making 61 and Tilak Varma remaining unbeaten on 51. Pakistan finished on 192/6. India therefore successfully defended its men’s Asian Games cricket title and completed a gold-medal double.

Cycling

India competed in track cycling, including sprint, keirin, omnium, madison and team events. The contingent included Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam, David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Harshveer Singh Sekhon.

Harshveer and Vishavjeet Singh finished eighth in the men’s madison. India’s riders also reached later rounds in sprint and keirin events. However, India did not win a medal in cycling.

Indian riders put up competitive performances, but the country missed out on a medal in equestrian at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Esports

Esports was among the newer disciplines on India’s Asian Games programme. Indian competitors participated in eFootball, League of Legends, Pokémon Unite and Puyo Puyo Champions.

The Indian esports contingent gained experience against some of Asia’s established gaming teams but did not win a medal. The discipline nevertheless represented an important expansion of India’s Asian Games participation into competitive gaming.

Fencing

India competed across the men’s and women’s foil, sabre and epee events. CA Bhavani Devi was among the prominent Indian fencers in the women’s sabre competition, but lost her individual sabre pre-quarterfinal to China’s Rao Xuyi.

India’s teams reached the knockout stages in several events but did not secure a podium finish. The women’s sabre team, for instance, defeated Indonesia before bowing out to Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals.

India’s judokas were unable to reach the podium, with the country finishing the judo competition without a medal.

Kabaddi
