Shooting has given India the most medals at the Asian Games 2026.

India is taking part in the Asian Games 2026, held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. This marks India’s 20th consecutive appearance at the Games since the country first competed at the inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951.

This time, India has sent 495 athletes to compete in 36 different sports, one of the biggest teams India has ever sent. Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony.

Sehrawat stepped in at the last moment after Tajinderpal Singh Toor could not carry the flag because his kit arrived late.

India’s best-ever performance at the Asian Games came in Hangzhou 2022, where the country finished fourth on the medal table with 106 medals—28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze.

That tally has set the benchmark for the Indian contingent in Japan. However, gold medals have proved harder to come by at Aichi-Nagoya so far. As of September 25, India has won 23 medals — two gold, nine silver and 12 bronze.

With the Games scheduled to continue until October 4, India still has further opportunities to add to its medal tally.

Here are the two gold medals India has won so far at Asian Games 2026

India’s opening gold medal came from a team that had already tasted success at the previous edition — the women’s cricket team. At Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Harmanpreet Kaur‘s side defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final on September 22, successfully defending the gold medal won at Hangzhou 2022.

India posted 216-3, with Smriti Mandhana leading the charge with a blistering 79 off 45 balls. The bowlers then completed a dominant performance, dismissing Sri Lanka for just 69 to seal India’s first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games.

India’s second gold medal came in shooting on September 25, with Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh winning the mixed 10m air pistol team event. They had already set an Asian record earlier while qualifying for the final. In the gold medal match, they kept their calm and beat South Korea to win the top medal.

Apart from these two golds, shooting has given India the most medals overall: a gold, six silvers and four bronzes, taking the shooting medal tally to 11. Athletics has given India five medals, including two silvers and three bronzes.

With several medal events still to come—including men’s cricket, kabaddi, hockey, badminton and multiple athletics finals — India will have further opportunities to add to its tally before the Games conclude on October 4. So, India’s gold medal count is expected to go up further.

2. Shooting – Mixed 10m air pistol team: Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh won gold on September 25, defeating South Korea in the final after setting an Asian record in qualification.
