Shooting has given India the most medals at the Asian Games 2026.
India is taking part in the Asian Games 2026, held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. This marks India’s 20th consecutive appearance at the Games since the country first competed at the inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951.
This time, India has sent 495 athletes to compete in 36 different sports, one of the biggest teams India has ever sent. Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony.
Sehrawat stepped in at the last moment after Tajinderpal Singh Toor could not carry the flag because his kit arrived late.

India’s best-ever performance at the Asian Games came in Hangzhou 2022, where the country finished fourth on the medal table with 106 medals—28 gold, 38 silver and 40 bronze.
That tally has set the benchmark for the Indian contingent in Japan. However, gold medals have proved harder to come by at Aichi-Nagoya so far.
With the Games scheduled to continue until October 4, India still has further opportunities to add to its medal tally.

Here are the three gold medals India has won so far at Asian Games 2026
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
India’s opening gold medal came from a team that had already tasted success at the previous edition — the women’s cricket team. At Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Harmanpreet Kaur‘s side defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final on September 22, successfully defending the gold medal won at Hangzhou 2022.
India posted 216-3, with Smriti Mandhana leading the charge with a blistering 79 off 45 balls. The bowlers then completed a dominant performance, dismissing Sri Lanka for just 69 to seal India’s first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games.
India’s second gold medal came in shooting on September 25, with Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh winning the mixed 10m air pistol team event. They had already set an Asian record earlier while qualifying for the final. In the gold medal match, they kept their calm and beat South Korea to win the top medal.
India’s third gold medal came courtesy of the women’s kabaddi team. They successfully defended the title by countering the Iranian challenge, beating them 37-34 in a close encounter. It was the contingent’s 12th gold in this sport at this continental showpiece, taking its tally to 12, and the fourth for the women’s side.
India’s fourth gold medal also came in kabaddi, with the men’s team following their counterparts to successfully defend their title. The Indian men defeated Iran 40-34 in a thrilling final to claim their ninth Asian Games gold medal in kabaddi.
On 29 September, Neeru Dhanda won the women’s trap, and the women’s 4 × 400 m relay quartet of Kiran Pahal, Poovamma Machettira, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj took athletics gold. Archery then dominated 30 September, with India winning the women’s team compound, mixed team compound and men’s team compound events. Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav each won two golds there, while Kynan Chenai and Neeru Dhanda added the mixed trap team title.
On 2 October, Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod won the women’s team recurve. Boxing delivered three golds through Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), Parveen Hooda (65 kg) and Ankush Panghal (men’s 80 kg). Sujeet Kalkal won men’s freestyle 65 kg wrestling, and the women’s hockey team capped the day with gold. In all, India won 19 golds across cricket, shooting, kabaddi, athletics, archery, boxing, wrestling and hockey.
On 3 October, Kumkum Mohod won the women’s team individual gold, while Pranavi Urs handed India its historic first-ever women’s individual golf gold.
