Asian Games 2026 Day 1 Results: Elavenil bags twin silver, medal confirmed in MMA, cricket

India clinched two medals on Day 1

India’s medals on the opening day of Asian Games 2026 came in shooting, with two silver medals in the women’s 10m air rifle event.

The first of the two came from the team event, with Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar, and Vidarsa Vinod securing a second-place finish with a total of 1898 points in Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery in Japan.

The Chinese team took the gold with a world-record-breaking score of 1904.2 points. Valarivan and Sonam Maskar made it to the finals in the individual event.

Valarivan, a former world No.1, started brilliantly in the final and led for the first 20 shots in the final.

The Japanese shooter Hinata Taichi moved ahead in the next two shots, leading by just 0.3 points. Both had a literal shoot-off for the gold, with the Japanese scoring 10.6 and 10.2 over Elavenil’s 10.4 and 10.1, respectively.

It is Elavenil’s first individual Asian Games medal and India’s best-ever finish in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event, overtaking the bronze medal Ramita Jindal won in the last games.

In the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event, which is making its debut in the Asian Games, India confirmed a medal with Suchika Tariyal beating Altanchimeg Baigalmaa of Mongolia 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the Women’s traditional–60 kg event.

It was a dominating win, and the fans witnessed a teary-eyed Suchika on the mat. She will be aiming for the gold with a semi-final scheduled on Monday.

In the men’s event, Varun Sanyal had to pull out after he suffered exhaustion in the cruise ship, where he was accommodated. He was one of the athletes made to wait for hours to get accommodation.

Sanyal was found unconscious by a Nepal fighter and was given medical attention. He was deemed medically unfit and had to forfeit the match.

A Shefali Verma century helped India beat Bangladesh by a whopping 114 runs to make it to the finals of the women’s T20I event.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Indian openers got off to a brilliant start, scoring 72 in the powerplay. Shefali continued her attacking display, bringing up the century off just 49 balls on the final ball of the innings.

Bangladesh batters struggled from the start of the chase as they kept losing wickets. They were bundled out for 81 in just 15.4 overs. India will take on Sri Lanka in the finals on Tuesday, and the team will look to retain their gold medal.

Both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams started their campaign with dominating wins. Dilpreet Singh’s four goals were the highlight of a 13-1 win over Indonesia in the men’s Pool A match.

Earlier in the day, in the women’s event, India annihilated Uzbekistan with a 19-0 scoreline, with Deepika scoring eight goals.

The Indian table tennis and badminton teams got off to dominating wins. PV Sindhu got the team off to a winning start with her teammates Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma registering straight-set wins to sweep the contest 3-0.

Mixed results in table tennis team event, with both the men’s and women’s teams winning their first game against Indonesia 3-0. In the second game, the women’s team made a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 against Singapore. Their male counterparts suffered a straight-sets defeat to Iran.

There were also spirited performances from athletes in multiple events. India’s day started with hopes of a historic medal in Teqball, but India suffered tough defeats in both women’s singles and mixed doubles bronze medal matches.

Quimcy Dsouza fought hard against the top-seeded Yuina Sakamoto, but lost in straight sets.

She then paired with Mohammad Anas Beg in the mixed doubles and lost in straight sets to a Vietnamese Pair.

In swimming, Rishabh Das made it to the finals of the men’s 100m backstroke event, finishing sixth in the finals. In the same event, Utkarsh Patil, and in the men’s 100m freestyle, Benedicton Beniston missed out on making it to the finals, as they were marked as reserves for the finals.

In Wushu, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam produced a commendable performance in the men’s chanquan finals. He finished in 11th place, missing out on a medal by just 0.04 points.

Disappointment in the women’s singles and men’s singles sanda event as Aparna and Vikrant Baliyan bowed out with defeats in round of 16.
