Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 Day 1 Wrap: India win three gold medals on opening day, rewrite two NRs
Harmilan Bains opened India’s medal tally in the competition.
Fifteen Indian athletes, comprising eight women and seven men are participating in the ongoing Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 in Tehran, Iran. India, having previously topped the medal tally in the 2008 edition held in Doha, is striving for success in the current edition of the championships. During the last edition in Astana, India’s 25-member contingent secured a total of eight medals, including one gold, six silvers and one bronze. Tajinderpal Singh Toor emerged as the sole gold medallist in that campaign.
The schedule for day one of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 featured a lineup of exciting events. In the women’s category, the day kicked off with 60m Hurdles featuring Jyothi Yarraji followed by the long jump event featuring Shaili Singh and Nayana James. The afternoon session continued with Harmilan Bains competing in the women’s 1500m event.
For the men’s events later in the day, Tejas Shirse started with the 60m Hurdles, followed by Tajinderpal Singh Toor in the Shot Put. The day concluded with Ajay Kumar Saroj participating in the 1500m event.
India made an impressive start at the Asian Athletics Indoor Championships 2024, securing three gold medals on the opening day itself. The remarkable achievement unfolded at the Aftab e Enghelab Sports Complex in Tehran on Saturday.

Jyothi Yarraji wins Gold
Jyothi Yarraji achieved a new personal best and set a national record in the women’s 60m hurdles by clocking 8.12 seconds and securing the gold medal. This performance surpassed her previous personal best of 8.13 seconds, which was achieved during the last edition of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Astana.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor wins Gold
Tajinderpal Singh Toor continued his dominance at the continental level by securing the gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 with a record-breaking throw of 19.72 meters. During his third attempt in the evening, Toor surpassed the 19-year-old indoor national record previously held by Vikas Gowda at 19.60 meters (set in 2005 in the USA).
Toor currently also holds the position of the Asian leader in outdoor track and field events, maintaining both the Asian and national records with an impressive throw of 21.77 meters achieved in Bhubaneswar last year.
Harmilan Bains wins Gold
Harmilan Bains initiated India’s medal tally by clocking 4:29.55 seconds in the women’s 1500m final, securing an effortless victory. The double silver medallist from the Asian Games 2023 showcased her forte in the event.
The remaining Indian participants in the all-women long jump final during the morning session, Shaili Singh (6.27m) and Nayana James (6.23m), concluded their performances outside the medal positions, securing the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
In the evening session, apart from Tajinder, Ashok Kumar Saroj participated in 1500m finals and finished sixth with a timing of 3:52.56 seconds. Tejas Shirse competed in the 60m Hurdles finals and clocked 7.80 seconds to finish fifth. Dhanveer Singh finished fourth in men’s shotput with a throw of 18.59m.
