Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 Day 2 Wrap: Mohammed Afsal reaches 800m final

India have so far won three medals in the competition, which came on the opening day.

India surged to the top of the medal tally at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 after claiming three gold medals on the competition’s opening day on February 17th.

Day 2 featured a series of exciting competitions for both men and women athletes with Pooja in the high jump and for the men’s category, VK Elakkiyadasan in the 60m race and Mohammed Afsal in the 800m.

In the 800m heats, Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath from India dominated the competition, securing the top position with an impressive time of 1:53.54 and is qualified for the finals which is scheduled for Monday (Feb 19).

In the 60m semifinals, Elakkiya Dasan from India clocked a time of 6.79, securing the sixth position. However, in the 60m heats, he performed better, claiming the third position with a time of 6.75.

Pooja’s absence from the women’s high jump event remains shrouded in mystery, as the reason for her non-participation is unknown. Despite being listed as a participant, Pooja did not compete.

Monday’s lineup promises thrilling competitions with Indian athletes poised to make their mark. Keep an eye on the women’s 3000m final at 11:30 AM, where Indian contender Ankita will be racing. Following that, the women’s pole vault final at 12:00 PM will feature two talented athletes, Pavithra Venkatesh and E Baranica aiming for new heights.

Later in the day, the men’s 800m final at 7:10 PM where Afsal will be in action and the men’s 3000m final at 8:00 PM will see Indian runner Gulveer vying for top honors on the track.

As day two draws to a close, the standings reflect a fierce competition at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. China took the lead in the medal tally with an impressive total of nine medals including four gold, four silver and one bronze.

India follows closely behind in second place, having secured three gold medals so far. Kazakhstan holds the third position with a total of six medals consisting of two gold, two silver and two bronze.
