Round of 32 Summary

India’s Lakshya Sen, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the pre-quarterfinals after winning their opening encounters in men’s singles of the Indonesia Open 2023. Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallist started the proceedings by defeating Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in straight games (21-17, 21-13). Meanwhile, Orleans Masters winner Priyanshu Rajawat received a walkover from Kunlavut Vitidsarn who suffered an injury last week in the finals of the Singapore Open.

Later in the day, it was the turn of Srikanth to deliver the goods which he did by outclassing China’s Lu Guang Zu in straight games (21-13, 21-19). The former WR 1 started his campaign on a bright note by winning the opening game comfortably. He had a smooth sailing in the second game as well leading by a five-point margin but lost momentum in the ending stages.

The Chinese made use of this opportunity to level the scores (19-19). However, Srikanth used his experience to pull off the match in straight games and progressed to R16. The Thomas Cup winner was assisted by Pullela Gopichand from the back.

Lakshya Sen took on Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia having a 2-1 head-to-head advantage. Both the shuttlers were battling out hard in the first game until the mid-game interval. Things started to move away from the former All England Championships winner who lost a flurry of points after taking a one-point lead (11-10) in the first game mid-interval. The Malaysian shuttler after his opening round loss has announced an indefinite break from the BWF circuit.

In the women’s singles section, Aakarshi Kashyap was up against WR 2 An Se Young who is currently in great form having won five BWF tour titles this season. The South Korean defeated Aakarshi 21-10, 21-4 and is set to meet Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in R16.
