Tai Tzu Ying becomes first women's singles player to win five Taipei Open titles
The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist beat USA's Beiwen Zhang in straight games to lift the 2023 edition title.
Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying became the first women's singles player to win five Taipei Open titles (2012, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2023). The former World No. 1 defeated USA's Beiwen Zhang in straight games (21-14, 21-17) to clinch the title in the 2023 edition. This is her first title of the season after semi-final appearances in the Malaysia Open, All England Championships, and the Singapore Open.
The WR-4 shuttler had a smooth sailing en route to the title run, winning all of her matches in straight games. Three of the five matches she played this week finished under 30 minutes with the rest two taking 31 and 32 minutes respectively such has been her dominance throughout the Taipei Open 2023.
2023 season so far
Unlike other shuttlers, Tai Tzu Ying has played only five BWF tournaments so far — excluding the Sudirman Cup — and is currently placed 22nd in the BWF Finals ranking. She started the year taking part in the Malaysia Open, where she reached the semis and then went on a two-month break. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 silver medallist returned back to the circuit for the European leg taking part in the All England Championships and once again finished as the semi-finalist.
She has now started to play regularly and has taken part in three BWF tournaments this month — Singapore Open, Malaysia Open, and Taipei Open. The 29-year-old is regarded as one of the best badminton players to come out of Chinese Taipei and will also be an important member for the Paris Olympics, scheduled to held next year.
The BWF action after a week's break will next shift to Northern America with Canada and the USA holding two competitions consecutively in July.
