Canada Open 2023: PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen advance to pre-quarterfinals

Vishnuvardhan and Krishna Garaga pair sailed into the pre-quarters on the opening day
India's top seeds in men's and women's singles, Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu, registered comfortable victories in the opening round of Canada Open 2023 - a BWF 500 tournament. Commonwealth Games 2022 champion got better of second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in straight games (21-18, 21-15) and Sindhu on the other hand had an easy opposition from host country; defeating Tali NG (21-16, 21-9).
This was Lakshya Sen's second win against three-time junior champion Kunalvut Vitidsarn this year. Vitidsarn started the match on a positive note and held on to the lead for majority of the opening game. Laskhya on the other hand did not allow the lead to go beyond two points and was always in touching distance of reducing the deficit. At the latter stages, from (16-17), the Indian won five points out of the six points available to take the opening game after trailing for almost the entire game.
Unlike the opening game, Sen had a good start to the second game and had few good phases. From (12-14) it was one way traffic for the Indian, winning five consecutive points. The second seed looked to halt the play of the Lakshya Sen but could only muster one-point off the last ten points which proved to be decisive in the end. Lakshya's compatriot Sai Praneeth made an early exit by losing to Brazil's Ygor Coelho (12-21, 17-21). Next up, Sen will be up against Ygor for a place in the quarter-finals.
Two time Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu, did not face any hiccup either and had a smooth sailing against Tali NG. She is set to take on Japan's Natsuki Nidaira in the opening match on Court 1 on July 6th. Other Indian in the fray, Ruthvika Shivani did not last long and bowed out with a straight game loss over Supanida Katethong of Thailand.
