Canada Open 2023: PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen sail through to quarter-finals
Two Indians remain in the competition after the pre-quarterfinals stage
India's top seeds PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen progressed to the quarter-finals of Canada Open 2023 (BWF 500). The two-time Olympic champion received a walkover from Japan's Natsuki Nidaira while Lakshya Sen enjoyed a smooth sail into the quarters defeating Brazil's Ygor Coelho in straight games (21-15, 21-11). With this, Lakshya enlarged his h2h record to 4-0.
In the men's doubles section, after a opening round win against Chen Zhi Ray/Lu Chen, Krishna Prasad Garaga/Vishnuvarshan Goud Panjala lost to second seed Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in straight games (9-21, 11-21). With this loss, PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen are the only two Indian shuttlers remaining at the competition.
Sindhu ,28, was scheduled to play the opening encounter on Court 1 but with Nidaira withdrawing, the former world number two will have a day's rest before she takes on Gao Fang Jie in the quarters. The Indian has three matches against the Chinese so far with 0-3 h2h record. Sindhu will have the task cut out against the WR 45.
Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Lakshya Sen defeated Ygor Coelho of Brazil in straight games. Earlier, Ygor got the better of B. Sai Praneeth but couldn't go past the top seed Indian at the tour. Lakshya looked comfortable throughout the match and never let the game slip over. Next up, the Indian is set to take on Julien Carraggi from Germany with the former enjoying a (2-0) h2h record.
