The Indian shuttlers had an average tournament last year.

The ongoing BWF World Championships 2023 is scheduled to be held from 21 to 27 August 2023 in Royal Arena, Copenhagen, Denmark. India has sent a strong 14-member contingent to compete which includes former world champion PV Sindhu, current world number two in men’s doubles category Satwik-Chirag, and world number nine in men’s singles HS Prannoy.

Let’s look at last year’s performance of the Indian contingent in the BWF World Championships which was held in Tokyo, Japan.

Men’s Singles

In 2022, India sent four players in the men’s singles category to BWF World Championships 2022 which included B.Sai Praneeth, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and Lakshya Sen. Sai Praneeth lost to Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the opening round while Srikanth lost to Zhao Jun Peng in the second round after defeating Nhat Ngugen in the first round. Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy after progressing through the initial two hurdles clashed against each other for a place in the quarter-finals.

The encounter resulted in favour of Prannoy but he lost to Zhao Jun Peng in the quarter-finals; a round away from securing a historic medal.

Women’s Singles

Due to injury, in spite of receiving the number seven seeding, PV Sindhu didn’t participate in the BWF World Championships 2022 which resulted in India’s non-participation in the women’s singles category last year.

Mixed Doubles

India had two participations in the mixed doubles category. Two unseeded pairs of Ishan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto, Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Juhi Dewangan took part in the competition. There weren’t any formidable performances from either pair as they lost in the first and second rounds respectively.

Women’s Doubles

Eight Indian shuttlers represented India in the women’s doubles event. All the pairs won their opening round matches but eventually failed to progress further losing in the second round. Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to the number one-seed pair, Chen and Jia from China in the second round while Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh lost to third seed from South Korea Lee So Hee and Shin Seung Chan.

Treesa Jolly and Gaytri Gopichand lost to Malaysia’s Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan with Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam losing to fourth-seeded pair from South Korea.

Men’s Doubles

The men’s doubles category showed some remarkable performance last year with India winning its first-ever medal in this category. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty who were seeded 7 last year, created history by winning the bronze medal.

They defeated the former world champion and second-seeded pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi from Japan in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, they lost to the ultimate champions Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to settle for bronze.

M.R. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila were just a win behind the podium finish when they lost to former world champions and number-one-seeded pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the quarter-finals. Pairs of Attri and Sumeeth Reddy, Garaga and Panjala lost in their respective first-round matches.
