Fire erupted at Indonesia Masters semifinals today

A fire broke out at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, the venue of the Indonesia Masters 2024, on Sunday, forcing the suspension of play during the semifinals. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it is suspected that an electrical short circuit may have sparked it.

The fire erupted during the first semifinal match of the women’s doubles event, between Zhang Shu Xian-Zheng Yu of China and Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand. The players and the officials were evacuated safely from the court, as thick smoke filled the arena. The match was halted at 11-9 in the first game in favor of the Chinese pair.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) stated on its official website, announcing the temporary stoppage of play and assuring that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, play has been temporarily stopped at the Istora Senayan. Play at the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2024 will resume as soon as the matter is resolved,” the statement read.

The BWF also said that it will provide further updates on the status of the tournament and the rescheduling of the matches. The Indonesia Masters 2024 is a Super 500 event on the BWF World Tour, with a total prize money of US$420,000

The fire incident has raised concerns over the safety and security of the players and the spectators at the event, which is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world.
