Viktor Axelsen yet to return to the circuit.
A number of prominent shuttlers have withdrawn from the upcoming Indonesia Open 2025, one of the biggest Super 1000 tournaments on the BWF calendar, set to begin from June 3 to 8 at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta. In men’s singles, Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong, using a protected ranking status, and Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul have both withdrawn, creating room for lower-ranked players to advance in the main draw. China’s Lei Lan Xi also withdrew from the tournament.
Local fans will be disappointed by the absence of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, the top Indonesian women’s singles player and current World No. #6, who was seen as a strong title contender. Alongside her, Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, who entered under a protected ranking, has also pulled out, weakening the host nation’s challenge in the women’s singles.
The men’s doubles category sees the biggest list of withdrawals, a total of eight withdrawals, with World No. #6 Chinese duo He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu and Indonesian stars Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin (World No. #10) both pulling out.
England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy, along with Danish pair Jesper Toft and Andreas Søndergaard, are also notable absentees.

In women’s doubles, number #2 seeds Chiharu Shida/Nami Matsuyama of Japan and top Thai pair Nuntakarn Aimsaard/Benyapa Aimsaard will miss the action. Thai pair Laksika Kanlaha and Phataimas Muenwong also pulled out after featuring in multiple tournaments in recent weeks.
Mixed doubles has also taken a hit with the withdrawal of Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Phataimas Muenwong, USA’s Francesca Corbett (also in mixed) with Chen Zhi Yi, and Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin, who were seeded in the draw. Pakkapon and Phataimas were eliminated by an Indonesian pair in the round of 16 in the recent Singapore Open Super 750.
Despite the withdrawals, the tournament retains its star power with World No. #1 Shi Yuqi and Korea’s An Se-young set to headline the singles draw. Fans can also look forward to the presence of top contenders like Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Chen Yufei, both of whom recently claimed the Singapore Open Super 750 title.
As far as India is concerned, there’s much to watch out for. The experienced HS Prannoy returns to court while Lakshya Sen is set to make a comeback along with Kiran George. PV Sindhu and Malvika Bansod lead the Indian women’s singles campaign.

The star duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, former champions here, will also aim for another title run in men’s doubles. Women’s doubles will be represented by Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. The mixed doubles hope lies on Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who have performed well in recent tournaments.
While the withdrawal list is long and will affect the draw balance, it also opens up opportunities for lower-ranked and upcoming shuttlers to make a name for themselves at one of badminton’s biggest stages.
