Indian shuttlers are performing well in the ongoing tournament.
Toyota Thailand Open is in full flow and saw some impressive performances from the Indian contingent on Wednesday. While Sai Praneeth had to withdraw from the tournament due to a positive test for Covid-19, HS Prannoy defeated a higher-ranked Indonesian opponent.
The World No. 28 defeated World No. 7 Jonathan Christie 18-21, 21-16, 23-21 in a 1 hour and 15 minutes long match to go into the second round of the Thailand Open.
Facing all odds, Prannoy started the game slowly as his opponent stormed into a 4-0 lead. Christie maintained the lead at the interval which ended 11-8 in his favour and then won the first game. Following this setback, the Indian player turned the game on its head and secured the remaining two games to win the tie.
Prannoy increased the tempo in the second game and led on the break by 11-8, securing it by 21-16 later. The match was decided in the marathon third. Prannoy saved two match points and eventually won the game to march into the next round of Thailand Open.
Sai Praneeth was slated to play Malaysian Liew Daren but had to pull out unfortunately. Praneeth will now be under medical supervision for the next 10 days. His roommate Kidambi Srikanth was also made to withdraw from the tournament due to the protocols laid down by the governing body.
However, Srikanth tested negative on Monday’s test and has returned negative results since arriving in Thailand, but he will remain under self-isolation for the time being.
In the Men’s Doubles action, Indian pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila secured victory over New Zealand’s Oliver Leydon-Davis and Abhinav Manota. The duo secured victory in 37 minutes with a scoreline of 23-21, 21-17 in straight games.
In the first, which was closely contested throughout, the Indian pair led on the break 11-10 and secured it by 23-21. The duo had to struggle a little bit in the second. The New Zealanders led in the interval by 11-8, however, Arjun and Kapila made a strong comeback. They levelled the score at 12-12 and then won it by 21-17 score. The pair will now face England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the Round 2 and will hope to carry their form.
Meanwhile, N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa crashed out of the tournament. They faced a crushing 11-21, 19-21 defeat against the German pair of Linda Efler and Isabel Herttrich in the first round in Women's Doubles category.
