Thomas Cup and Uber Cup have historically been dominated by Indonesia and China respectively.
The BWF Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 Finals see the world’s best badminton nations clash for the prestigious team titles in Chengdu from 27 April to 5 May. The 33rd edition of the Thomas Cup and the 30th Uber Cup are held concurrently, continuing the tradition since 1984.
The Thomas Cup, badminton’s World Men’s Team Championship, has been dominated by Asian powerhouses over its 74-year history. Indonesia leads the way with 14 titles, followed closely by China with 10. Malaysia (5 titles), Japan (1), Denmark (1), and defending champions India (1) round out the list of winners.
In the Uber Cup, China has been the most successful nation with 15 titles to date. Japan (6 titles), Indonesia, and the United States (3 each) have also tasted glory. However, it was South Korea who emerged triumphant in 2022, defeating China to claim their second Uber Cup.
For India, The 2022 Thomas Cup triumph is considered one of the greatest achievements for Indian shuttlers. Starting the tournament as the least favorite, the Indian men’s badminton squad put up a historic performance and clinched the maiden Thomas Cup title.
HS Prannoy’s gallant performance, beating Rasmus Gamke in the semis, Kidambi Srikanth’s famous win in the final against Jonathan Christie, and the Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty’s sensational display allowed the team to win the gold medal.
