India are set to have participants in each category.
As the badminton world turns its gaze towards the Centro Deportivo Municipal Gallur in Madrid, the Madrid Spain Masters 2024 beckons as a pivotal event in the BWF World Tour Super 300 series. Scheduled from March 26 to 31, this tournament not only boasts a substantial prize pool of US$210,000 but also marks a significant checkpoint in the Paris Olympics 2024 qualification journey.
The reigning champions, Kenta Nishimoto and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung will defend their titles in a field brimming with talent. However, it’s the Indian contingent that is under the spotlight, particularly in the men’s singles category. Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen, once formidable forces on the court, now find themselves in a precarious position.
Srikanth’s struggle to string together consecutive wins has been a cause for concern, with a mere four instances of back-to-back victories in 23 tournaments since the onset of 2023. His inability to advance beyond the quarterfinals has seen his ranking slide from 13th to 24th. Similarly, Lakshya Sen’s form has waned, resulting in a drop from the 10th to the 19th spot.
This decline in performance has cast a shadow over India’s aspirations to field two men’s singles players in the Olympics, a feat not achieved since 2004. The ongoing French Open and upcoming Spain Masters are not just tournaments; they are opportunities for redemption and a chance to bolster their Olympic qualifications.
On the women’s front, PV Sindhu remains a beacon of hope. Despite a year devoid of individual titles, her consistent performances have kept her in a relatively secure position. Yet, the Spain Masters presents an opportunity for Sindhu to reclaim her spot at the pinnacle of the podium.
