India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy to end their 11-year ICC trophy drought.
It was an emotional night for every Indian cricket fan as the Indian cricket team lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy after defeating South Africa by seven runs at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
After this victory, the Men in Blue ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement, whereas Dravid completed his last assignment with the national side and buried his ODI World Cup 2007 horror on a good note by winning an ICC title as a head coach.
Rohit became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to lift an ICC T20 World Cup trophy. Dhoni won the inaugural championship in 2007 in South Africa. The Men in Blue stayed undefeated in the T20 World Cup 2024 and became the third side after the West Indies and England to win the T20 World Cup title two times.
From Rohit to Jasprit Bumrah, every Indian player who was named in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, gave more than 100 percent to lift the trophy and gave a memorable farewell to ‘The Wall’ Rahul Dravid. However, there were three Indian cricketers, who didn’t get a chance to play a single match at the event, despite being included in the main 15-man squad.
Let’s take a look at three Indian players who were part of the 15-man squad but didn’t feature in the XI
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal
The 22-year-old star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal earned his maiden T20I World Cup call-up after performing well in the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The star opener has already played 17 T20I matches and has amassed 502 runs with one century and four half centuries. It was expected that he would open along with Rohit Sharma, but Jaiswal didn’t get any chance as the Indian think tank chose Virat Kohli as Rohit’s opening partner throughout the tournament.
2. Sanju Samson
After performing well with the bat in the IPL 2024 for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson earned his maiden T20I World Cup call-up. The wicket-keeper batter was the second-choice keeper after Rishabh Pant.
However, Sanju featured in the only warm-up fixture against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024. He didn’t play any of the main matches till the end of the tournament. The Indian think tank went with Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper.
3. Yuzvendra Chahal
The wily-leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was part of the T20 World Cup 2022 squad, but didn’t play a single game, where Men in Blue were knocked out of the tournament after semi-final defeat to England.
After being in and out of the Indian T20I setup for a long time now, Chahal earned a re-call to the side after good performances for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he didn’t get a chance to play a single game this time around as well with Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav getting selected ahead of him.
