3 players whom RR should retain ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction Ft. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Rajasthan Royals (RR) have not won the IPL title since 2008.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a disappointing second half in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. They won eight of their first nine games, but failed to finish in the top two. In the playoffs, they reached the Eliminator stage, but were knocked out one step before the final.
The Royals won the inaugural IPL tournament in 2008, but since then, they have reached only one final, in 2022, which they lost to Gujarat Titans.
Now ahead of the IPL 2025, the Royals and their new head coach Rahul Dravid will turn their focus on finalizing the retentions and plans for the upcoming mega auction. They have plenty of quality T20 match-winners in their squad from last season.
Each franchise can retain up to six players using retentions and the Right To Match (RTM) options. Each franchise has the flexibility to select their retention and RTM combinations but there is a limit of five capped players (Indian and international) and two uncapped players.
In this article, we will see the three most probable players Rajasthan may retain.
Here are 3 players whom RR should retain ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction:
1. Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson made his IPL debut in 2013 for RR under Dravid’s captaincy and now the Kerala cricketer is the team’s skipper while Dravid is the coach. Barring the two seasons in 2016 and 2017, when Rajasthan were banned, Samson has played for the Rajasthan-based franchise.
After impressive shows with the bat, he got the captaincy in 2021. He marched the side to the final in 2022, which they lost.
Samson has been the leading batter for the franchise with 4419 runs in 167 matches with three centuries. Considering all this, Samson should be the first retention for the Royals ahead of the upcoming mega auction.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal was picked by Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020 shortly after he played for India U19. In quick time, Jaiswal cemented his place as the RR opener. So far, he has scored 1607 runs in 53 IPL matches with two centuries and nine fifties, and has a strike rate of 150.61.
Jaiswal also holds the record for the fastest IPL fifty in 13 balls and his performances led to his India debut. Jaiswal has cemented his spot in Indian Test and T20I teams and his retention by the Rajasthan Royals will only help the franchise going forward as Jaiswal is also seen as a future captain.
3. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal was heartbroken when he was not retained by RCB ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. He had spent the majority of his IPL career with RCB, picking 139 wickets for them. Then, Rajasthan bought him in the IPL 2022 mega auction and the leg-spinner delivered instantly for his new franchise.
He won the Purple Cap in IPL 2022 and took his first IPL hat-trick as well. Chahal has picked up 66 wickets for RR in three seasons.
He is the leading wicket-taker in the IPL history with 205 wickets in 160 matches, with best bowling figures of 5/40 and an economy of 7.84. Given all this, Chahal should be retained by RR ahead of the mega auction.
